Summary: World of Warcraft Launcher 4.2 crashes on initialisation Product: Wine Version: 1.3.23 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ktowns@live.com.au
Created an attachment (id=35354) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=35354) Terminal output
Basically as the summary reads. It crashes at the point of saying 'Initialising, please wait.' It did work *once* for me, after a restart, but that hasn't worked again. This is with a fresh installation, new prefix. I've previously tried winetricks ie7 as suggested under a similar bug report, but to no avail.

I also get a similar crash. Mine happens right after initialization. It worked fine about 2 weeks ago when I installed and updated WoW. I cannot get it to work at all even in a new prefix.

Same here. Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit identical problems with wine-1.2r6 and wine-1.3.31 (ubuntu distro). Tried winetricks ie6, ie7, ie8
Running Launcher.exe from command line gives a million fixme:shell:DllGetClassObject failed for CLSID={871c5380-42a0-1069-a2ea-08002b30309d} (unknown)
Ctrl^C will cause WowError.exe to run eventually.
Attached dialogue from running Launcher.exe from command line.

This just started happening to me the past few days after I upgraded something. But my launcher crashes right after it starts downloading.

--- Comment #6 from Ursan Marius Bogdan Creationn@gmail.com 2011-11-11 06:09:59 CST --- openSUSE Tumbleweed, using 11.4 as base, 64 bit system using wine 1.3.32, Launcher.exe fails to download the of the game (about 10Gb of data).
Workaround: - if you have windows install the game there and copy the files into linux; run Launcher.exe for updates and Wow.exe -opengl to play the game - if you have virtual box install windows in it, create a 20gb vbox image and install the game in a shared folder between windows from vbox and a linux folder; run Launcher.exe for updates and Wow.exe -opengl to play the game

--- Comment #10 from cookandhisguitar@msn.com 2011-11-17 19:07:09 CST --- I had the same problem running Launcher.exe on Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 using WINE versions 1.2.3 and 1.3.32.
I found that if I disabled P2P on the downloader (Options > Downloader Preferences > untick "Enable Peer-to-Peer Transfer" and apply) then it worked as normal.

--- Comment #11 from Thomas Spear Speeddymon@gmail.com 2011-11-20 02:26:11 CST --- I hope that wine-1.3.33 is added to Fedora updates-testing soon. I'm not sure if my problem is due to this bug or bug 23875
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27650
--- Comment #12 from Thomas Spear Speeddymon@gmail.com 2011-11-20 02:40:23 CST --- After installing ie6 via winetricks, I was able to confirm via receiving the same error message as in comment 8, that my issue is the same as this bug. So definitely hoping for the new wine to be pushed to updates-testing.

--- Comment #13 from Thomas Spear Speeddymon@gmail.com 2011-11-25 00:48:05 CST --- wine-1.3.33 is in fedora updates-testing now.
You can install it with:
sudo yum --enablerepo=updates-testing install wine
or you can update to it from fedora 1.3.29
sudo yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update wine
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27650
--- Comment #14 from Thomas Spear Speeddymon@gmail.com 2011-11-25 05:55:33 CST --- With wine-1.3.33 from fedora updates-testing, with a clean ~/.wine the launcher still crashes inside wine. BTW, I feel I should mention that by crash here, I get the popup from wine and backtrace in console.
The actual Launcher.exe continues running and responding to mouse input, but it doesn't keep downloading. In fact, it doesn't even close fully when I've hit the close button. The window disappears, but it stays running. I let it go for ~40 minutes now and it was using 100% CPU (idle priority maybe? I didn't notice any slow down of my laptop), so then I finally killed it.
Removing ~/.wine, re-running winecfg, installing gecko, and then installing ie6 via winetracks still produces the same result (launcher crash with blizzard's submit box appearing to allow you to report the issue to Blizzard

--- Comment #15 from Jamie Anderson jamie+winebugz@jamieanderson.org 2011-11-29 21:20:19 CST --- I have been having the same problem.
It could be a total fluke, but I started the Launcher with WINEDEBUG=+wininet instead my usual WINEDEBUG=-all, and I was able to get it to run long enough to get the core part of the new 4.3 update installed and get me into the game.
Is it possible that the extra work of outputting all the debug info prevented or delayed some sort of race condition that is causing the launcher to crash?

--- Comment #16 from Thomas Spear Speeddymon@gmail.com 2011-11-29 23:30:45 CST --- I was pointed to a workaround on a separate bug that I'd like to request some of you try.
Rather than running the Launcher to update WoW, run the BackgroundDownloader.exe in the WoW directory, and as soon as it opens, go into the preferences for that app, disable Peer to Peer downloading, and enable "Don't throttle background download". Then exit the background downloader, run the launcher and see if you still get the same issue.

--- Comment #21 from B. K. shadowcat8@excite.com 2011-11-30 18:21:50 CST --- The workaround in comment #16 worked for me... eventually.
I was getting a Windows error immediately upon starting the BackgroundDownloader.exe. The error was "Invalid Torrent File". So, as I was going into the installation of WoW to see if I could find the torrent file it was complaining of, I got an idea.
I ran the downloader from the last patch (which was only 12MB), and that let me access the Preferences to disable the peer-to-peer and enable the "Don't throttle..." Then, I re-ran the Launcher and it was able to run and even loaded the News page fully.
Thanks and I hope this helps.

--- Comment #22 from Jamie Anderson jamie+winebugz@jamieanderson.org 2011-11-30 18:45:34 CST --- I had the same problem as Comment #21 with the bad torrent file error.
If you haven't installed any IE Winetricks, you can close the WoW Error dialog when Launcher.exe crashes and get into the Downloader Preferences and make the necessary changes described in Comment #16. I don't think this works if you have installed any version of IE however, because you then get a different error popup.
By the way, the workaround I suggested in Comment #15 does not work, don't try it.
