The issue is still present in Wine-1.3.2. On startup the game blanks the screen then dies with a stack overflow error in the end.
I think the problem is network related: the game first connects to softwrap.com through port 443 (a DRM rights management company) then it connects to the server of doublefusion.com (maybe checking for updates).
After 'winetricks wininet secur32 ie6' the crash doesn't occur, but a window is shown saying something about 'active Internet connection is required to play the game'. I couldn't proceed any further.
