Choosing "Insert / Audio Recording" (or video recording) causes the dialog 
"At least Microsoft DirectX 8.1 and Microsoft Windows Media Player 8 are
required to record sound."
So I installed WMP10.  The dialog is still there.
The remaining log messages included:

That second uuid is IObjectWithSite, fwiw.

2007 download is dead, 2010 is up, but doesn't yet install. See bug 22536.

This ticket has not been updated for over 900 days. Development recommends
to check the status on your bug every release or two and let to be known if the
bug is still present. If not, mark it fixed. If you are no longer able to put
effort to this ticket, you can abandon it.

Is this still an issue with 1.7.4 or higher ?

IObjectWithSite was added to the FilterGraph COM object with:

commit 8c91f1bf5e5a22ad90e7c1723b62342c3734fda8
Author: Aric Stewart 
Date:   Mon Jan 16 08:12:23 2012 -0600

quartz: Implement IObjectWithSite and IAMGraphBuilderCallback for the
FilterGraph.

So in theory this bug should be fixed. In practice it needs to be still tested.

In 1.7.48 the message that pops up says "OneNote cannot record audio. Make sure
that your audio recording device is installed and configured properly, and then
try again." When I click OK, OneNote crashes.

Since the original message about DirectX and WMP is gone, I'm going to mark
this fixed. The crash on clicking OK is a separate issue.
