I could, however, I see nothing in the logs that show that this key is needed.

Can you verify that the installer crashes on a clean install of wine without the
uninstall key, and then that it does indeed succeed after creating the specified
key?

Also, please let me know whether this is under HKEY_CURRENT_USER or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
