Summary: Team Fortess 2 locks up sometimes Product: Wine Version: 0.9.50. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: wine-directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jorenko+wine@gmail.com

Sometimes, when I've been playing Team Fortress 2 with no problems for anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours, the game will suddenly lock up; it goes into a state where the video freezes and the last half second or so of audio repeats. At this point my CPU is redlined, and gnome is generally unresponsive. The only thing I can do to get out of it is switch to a text console and killall -9 hl2.exe.
I've attached Steam's output when this happens.
I looked at bug 7698, and I don't think this is that problem as that seemed to be concerning hard crashes rather than locked up processes.

This is the end of the Steam output from my latest lockup. Based on this, I'm inclined to say that there's a memory leak somewhere causing the problem, since both dumps involved the inability to allocate but are otherwise rather different.

I'm not setting the dxmode command-line option on launch. The video options dialog in the game reports hardware level 8.1 and software level 9.0.
I'm on 0.9.50 now, but this has been occurring as long as I've had the game, since 0.9.48.
One thing I haven't tried yet is disabling compiz while playing. I'll try that and report back.

--- Comment #7 from James Jurack jorenko+wine@gmail.com 2007-12-10 21:48:00 --- Disabling compiz-fusion does seem to mitigate the problem for the most part. I've had one crash since, but it wasn't accompanied by any out-of-memory error messages. I guess this could be a leak in either compiz-fusion or wine, or perhaps just a strange interaction between the two?
