Are you sure it's not a game bug? E.G., does it work on Windows?
Yes it does work on Windows. It's important to install NFS5-3.5.20040310.ZIP though.
Moreover demo from this site http://download3.gamershell.com/filehell/0919fb179c211d3ebd400ae03a6ad0444cd...
does work on MS Windows XP without renaming gimme.dll but you have to set compatibility mode to Windows 98. The same action fails in Wine.

--- Comment #3 from NSLW lukasz.wojnilowicz@gmail.com 2010-11-17 06:48:24 CST --- As I mentioned earlier the problem is also present in demo so I'll write how to test it.
Wine: 1) remove ~/.wine 2) install nfs5onlinedemo.zip 3) change "Windows Version" to "Windows 98" 4) wine PorscheDemo.exe driver=dx7z
Files created in SavedData are: nfs5.trk XXDefXX.sav pic16.tm1 (0 bytes long)
Windows XP SP3: 1) install nfs5onlinedemo.zip 2) set compatibility mode for PorscheDemo.exe to "Windows 98" 3) start PorscheDemo.exe
Files created in SavedData are: nfs5.trk XXDefXX.sav pic16o.fsh (6960 bytes long)
After unpacking pic16o.fsh by FSHTOOL I get two files: 0000.BMP (54x64 image of driver's head) index.fsh which content is following
"FSHTool generated file -- be very careful when editing
pic16.fsh
FSH
SHPI 1 objects, tag GIMX
BUFSZ 13920
NOGLOBPAL
!PAD 8 4275792045525453
driv 0000.BMP
BMP 78 +0 54 64 {0 0 0 0}
#END"
Link to the application that can open .fsh files http://www.nfsunlimited.net/files/download/43
File pic16.fsh is essential for starting race in full version of NFS Porsche.

--- Comment #7 from zippy gohabsgo60@yahoo.ca --- still crashes in wine 1.7.31

--- Comment #8 from zippy gohabsgo60@yahoo.ca --- i just noticed a couple of things:
first, the game doesn't crash if i enable heapcheck ! the game does output this a few times:
galloc - FAILED. OUT OF MEMORY. SIZE REQUESTED 1566399840
but it doesn't seem to affect the game at all.
however, if i enable the heap debug channel, the game always crashes earlier, regardless of the heapcheck status.

Yes, I tested the demo.It was the demo https://www.fileplanet.com/archive/p-18540/Need-for-Speed-Porsche-Unleashed
It would help if you reported the version tested as fixed.
I went ahead and retested, wine-3.19 works fine. One can play the in-game race without any crash. Marking fixed.
