backtrace of IE8 failing to run

Tried to run IE8 but it did not even launch - it just gave a crash error. I
attach a backtrace.

You need to use

wine 'C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore'

Thank you, but that is exactly the command I used to run IE and then it
immediately crashed. Before IE loaded a dialog appeared, stating: "The program
iexplore.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience."

In case it's helpful I attach the output of the terminal from which I ran the
command.

Works fine here. Can you try again in Wine 1.5.12?

Did you use winetricks ie8? That works for me too.

Ok, I have downloaded the IE package from
http://windows.microsoft.com/pt-BR/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8 and
installed in a clean prefix. I can confirm it runs (not as good as with
winetricks =).
