Bug #: 31113 Summary: Civilization V crashes after specific amount of game turns Product: Wine Version: 1.5.5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: megatog615@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 40841 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=40841 Page fault log
After a specific amount of game turns(depending on how the game has played out), Civilization V will crash with a page fault. If you save the game just before you can do nothing else and must click "NEXT TURN," you can reproduce the bug every time. I am going to attach a save file at just this point. All you have to do is click NEXT TURN.

--- Comment #4 from Cristina Botta crisbotta@gmail.com 2012-07-06 21:17:15 CDT --- The bug is still there on 1.5.8. I've just reinstalled steam and the game on a clean prefix. The problem is actually worse now. It happens on the first turn or even during loading. :-(
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31113
--- Comment #5 from Evan Goers megatog615@gmail.com 2012-07-06 23:33:24 CDT --- If it crashes during loading it is a different bug. The bug only occurs when you have passed your turn. I have confirmed this behavior on several playthroughs. All different turn counts, but same hang for a few seconds then page fault with an msvc90 error.

--- Comment #6 from Cristina Botta crisbotta@gmail.com 2012-07-07 09:55:02 CDT --- Up to 1.5.7 it was between turns, always different turn and always a little bit after renaissance. After I updated to 1.5.8 I started getting the exact same problem as before, but earlier, when the game is loading.

Forgot to say ... it happens, always, as soon as you start a game (after setup).
Not sure if it is the same bug, but did not feel like creating a new one since they seem very close.

--- Comment #16 from Patrick winehq@patbert.com 2012-07-23 22:13:47 CDT --- This definitely does not happen when I have these add-ons disabled:
Harold Bluetooth's Denmark Kamehameha's Polynesian Empire Nebuchadnezzar's Babylon Sejong The Great's Korea Wonders of the Ancient World
If they are all enabled, it always crashes at 180 turns. When I disable them, I can play a full game every time. I am going to try enabling them one by one, but it is obviously going to take some time to track down the culprit.
Also, I am playing with the Gods & Kings Expansion pack, and that doesn't seem to have any negative consequences.

--- Comment #17 from Chanixy chani.xy@gmail.com 2012-07-26 13:34:13 CDT --- I believe this is fixed (at least for me) in wine 1.5.9.
I have not tried a full game, but it before it happened to me at starting games, now I have played some 150 turns and didn't see it.
I will post back if I encounter it again.
Thank you wine developers.

You're right, that was a different problem. I updated to 1.5.9 and it fixed the previous problem I had starting a game. Now I'm seeing the crash described in this bug, though. Right at turn 145 with G+K expansion and the DLC enabled (Bluetooth, etc).
I'll attach the error in a separate comment.

Maybe a bit silly, but perhaps it is a certain Civ being in the game being played, their special unit or some effect?

--- Comment #30 from rumleech@yahoo.co.uk 2012-09-09 04:24:43 CDT --- OK, I've been running some test games to find out which DLC's are affected by this bug. My results are; Harald, Hawaii, Babylon and Korea suffer from mid-game crashes. Genghis, Spain & Inca and Ancient Wonders seem to be OK.
It looks like the crash occurs when the DLC Civ enters the Renaissance Era but I'll need to do further testing to be sure.
Ancient Wonders has it's own bug (the wonders don't show up at all) and Hawaii messes up the start up menu but these are stories for another day and another place.

I've finished this day the french CIV 5 Without any trouble (As previously), if it is a slight problem video after the discovery of satellite in giant map, but i think it's a problem of configuration of DirectX Wine with the size of video card! Is it because the Civs from earlier DLC's didn't show up in your French game? My research (so far) seems to show that the crash happens when DLC Civs enter the Renaissance.

The attached trace shows that when using the native msvcp90.dll DLL from 1.5.13, the page fault seems to occur in that's library's impl of basic_string_char_const_ptr:
Last thing in the log before the PF was this:
0051:fixme:msvcp:_Locinfo__Locinfo_ctor_cat_cstr (0xd6cec04 1 C) semi-stub
Although that appears several times earlier, so may not be related.
A lot of people seem to be showing traces indicating an issue with basic_string::char_traits, this happens for me when using native msvcr90/msvcp90 DLLs only.
Can someone retitle this bug so the title indicates the issue is with msvcp90, in basic_string_char_const_ptr, or at least basic_string::char_traits, not the number of game turns? Thanks.

--- Comment #36 from Eddy Brown de Colstoun eddy_b_de_c@msn.com 2012-09-16 04:17:27 CDT --- I agree with the last answer! Whichever version of Wine, the original problem described in this post is a library problem as described in the msvcp90.dll errors log, so it would be better to focus on this one and its environment, because this error appears with different numbers of turns and whatever the chosen civilization!

--- Comment #42 from rumleech@yahoo.co.uk 2012-10-07 09:12:55 CDT --- I think I've found a workaround for this bug. If you enter the DLC menu and untick Gods and Kings, accept the change then go back into the DLC menu and retick Gods and Kings the it seems to work fine. Not only do you get through the Renaissance without problems but the Ancient Wonders show up as the should and the Polynesians don't mess up the choose civilization menu on setting up a game. Loading a game requires you to go into the DLC menu and untick Gods and Kings. It's all a bit fiddly but it all seems to work. I'm sure there are technical reasons for all this but I'm not nearly talented enough with Wine to figure out what they may be.
I'm going to investigate it further and if anyone else wants to join in I'm sure it will help.

A +relay,+msvcp log would be really huge (>13 GB and the game isn't loaded yet). I tried a recent version of the toggle-debug-traces patch (http://wiki.winehq.org/Debug_trace_toggle_key), but it doesn't work well with +relay.

But even if the save crashes, then it can still be an issue in wine, maybe something corrupts the save that causes a crash later. If you're claiming that this is a bug on Windows too, then start a game on Windows and try to finish it. If that works without a crash we can assume it has something to do with wine.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |mcasadevall@ubuntu.com
--- Comment #82 from Michael Casadevall mcasadevall@ubuntu.com 2013-07-20 11:02:33 CDT --- I've done some work on localizing the crash, and believe I know what the underlying problem is (it is also the same issue that affects BNW from working under WINE).
The crash is specifically caused when any civilization in the game enters the Renaissance era, when the game attempts to recruit spies for the DLC civilizations. As the DLC has to be compatible with both the base game (which didn't have spies) and the expansions, the DLC by itself doesn't contain any spies; as such when the game tries to recruit one, it reads invalid memory, and boom, crash.
The Expansions for Civ (both GNK and BNW) have updated XML files living in Assets/Expansion/DLC/*/Gameplay/XML, if one manually copies these XML files and overrides the original files in Assets/DLC/*, you can continue a previously crashing game, and continue on your path to world domination :-).
I believe the underlying cause is how WINE specifically is returning files in one of the directory search options. Based on behavior I saw with the release of BNW, Civ tries to load things on windows in the order of: DLC_*, Expansion, Expansion2, Expansion DLC overlay, Expansion2 DLC overlay.
Under WINE, this order is screwed up, and tries to do things like Expansion2, Expansion, DLC overlays, DLC_*
Once I localize which function causing the difference in behavior, making a patch *should* be easy ...

--- Comment #92 from Michael Casadevall mcasadevall@ubuntu.com 2013-07-28 03:27:17 CDT --- So I have confirmed that the underlying cause of the data file errors is due to the load order of the civ5pkg files on startup (which also break BNW). Unfortnately, due to the APIs being involved being extremely core to WINE combined with the fact that this app only works due to luck (its taking advantage of a quirk in Windows that is only true some of the time), there is no real way to patch this.
Without a shim layer in WINE that allows us to selectively apply patches to apps, there's no way this can be fixed.
That being said, I've managed to modify a FUSE module in a way that will cause the datafiles to load correctly (essentially rewriting readdir and making it return files in the proper order).
My code is a bit hacky, but it works, and I've managed to set it up on two machines, and play several SP and MP matches to completion. I'll try and get a writeup done tonight or tomorrow.

--- Comment #106 from luke16 luke16@gmail.com --- Also, it leaves out DLC_Deluxe as well, if you have that.
if you are using the default wine prefix, then cd to ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Assets/DLC/
then you can do the following, assuming you have BNW installed,
cp Expansion2/DLC/DLC_01/Gameplay/XML/* DLC_01/Gameplay/XML/ cp Expansion2/DLC/DLC_02/Gameplay/XML/* DLC_02/Gameplay/XML/ cp Expansion2/DLC/DLC_03/Gameplay/XML/* DLC_03/Gameplay/XML/
and so on for every folder that's in Expansion2/DLC/
If you have only GandK instead, replace Expansion2 with Expansion1

I had a save where I was one turn away from completing Astronomy (my first Renaissance era technology) and it would crash each time my next turn started. Run cache integrity check in steam. When you creating single player, go to civ selection screen (not in advanced settings). If bug still presents, there will be no scroll bar. Or create game with IGE(ingame editor) and add techs that will grant spy to you.

On selection screen for single player games, there is indeed no scroll bar (I've used random in my two test games) and I can see part of an off screen extra person. That seems a different bug ?

--- Comment #119 from kokoko3k@gmail.com kokoko3k@gmail.com --- None of the workarounds worked for me; if the problem is really the findfirstfile function, then it is just a matter of luck.
So I ended up in using an hardfile formatted in ntfs. Now i'm at turn 185 and all is still working.
* The hardfile is 10GB, i think it is enough for CivV plus addons. * $CIVILIZATION_WINEPREFIX is the wine prefix where civilization is actually installed
# dd if=/dev/zero of=./civ5.loopfile bs=1G count=10 # mkfs.ntfs -f -I -s 4096 -F ./civ5.loopfile # mkdir /mnt/civ5.loopdir + # mount ./civ5.loopfile /mnt/civ5.loopdir -o loop -t ntfs-3g # cp -a $CIVILIZATION_WINEPREFIX/ /mnt/civ5.loopdir/ + # export WINEPREFIX=/mnt/civ5.loopdir/
And play as usual from the new location. Actions marked as "+" need to be executed every time of course.
(...now try to do that on a fat32 windows system eheheh...)

--- Comment #120 from Yuri Shishenko yurishish@gmail.com --- (In reply to kokoko3k@gmail.com from comment #119)
You can create NTFS image file, mount it and copy Civ file from Civ folder in Steamapps folder. Then you can add the entry to the /etc/fstab file like this
<disk image file> /home/user/$steamfolder/drive_c/blablabla/Civilization\ V ntfs loop 0 0
So it will mount automagically from start-up. No need to use separate wineprefix.

The post you've quoted is pretty much self explanatory. Hardfile means a disk image in a file. Basically, a file that contains a filesystem and can be mounted for reading / writing as a loop device.

--- Comment #127 from Von Random von+winehq@vdrandom.org --- Here's how I did it: 1. Created the 10G loop file and formated it in NTFS.
2. Mounted it into my steam wineprefix location, specifically where it installs Civ5. (Well, not directly, I used the power of symlinks, so that my fstab doesn't get ugly.): ~ % mount|grep civ5 /home/username/opt/civ5.disk on /media/civ5 type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,allow_other,blksize=4096)
~ % ll ~/.wine/drive_c/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid\ Meier's\ Civilization\ V lrwxrwxrwx 1 username users 11 May 4 21:44 /home/username/.wine/drive_c/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization V -> /media/civ5
3. Run steam from that wineprefix and install Civ5 as usual. Takes some time since NTFS-3g is slower than native fs.
4. Run the game from steam. Works like a charm.

--- Comment #128 from Steven V. Wilson funmaker_11@yahoo.com --- I disabled the Stam overlay about a year ago and the game has not crashed once in all that time.
Solution
Gointo your Steam liabray and right click on Civilization 5 Select options On the main tab -should come up by default- deselect the use overlay check box click ok
click on the play button and enjoy. Problem solved.
Now we just need the wine devs to fix the wine compatablitie with the Steam overlay as this fix works for every single game I have played via wine.

--- Comment #141 from Steven V. Wilson funmaker_11@yahoo.com --- Since this game has been ported to Steam for Linux ans Steam OS (June 10,2014) then I don't think there is much reason to run this game via win. I haven't even played the wine version since Aspyr ported the gamew to Linux. They are about to release a major bug fix and then after that the only thing left would be the Steam Workshop for modding. Everything works on the Linux part except for mods and the SDK but Aspyr promises that Mods and the SDK are being worked on now. I figure why make things difficult by using wine for a game when there is a native Linux version. Most games still arn't ported to Linux yet so wine is still in great need but since the Linux version never crashes for most people then why not try the Linux versioin of this game,
