Please copy the XINPUT1_3.DLL file from windows into system32 directory and try again.
By adding this DLL you can launch the game. I think that is not worth to be called a "bug".

Please copy the XINPUT1_3.DLL file from windows into system32 directory and try again.
That almost worked. The game now asks for the correct DVD to be placed into the drive, even when the disc is there. Does that count as a bug?

I guess yes, but I think this is a bug related to Copy Protection. From what I found on the Internet Assassins Creed seems to be using "SafeDisc 4.85". Could be rather bug #219.

have the same effect?

yes
after copying the .dll to the dir.. wine outputs the following(in terminal) before requesting the correct disc.
fixme:mountmgr:harddisk_ioctl unsupported ioctl 70020
the line above is repeated a lot.

This is my log for the crash. The X_input dll is already copied to system32. I do get the same error.

--- Comment #8 from Andrew Fenn andrewfenn@gmail.com 2008-11-12 08:38:03 --- xinput1_3.dll.so now exists in wine however we're missing D3DXCleanMesh and D3DXCompileShader in d3dx9_36.dll.so which need to be implemented to get Assassin's Creed running.

please retest without a native xinput1_3 dll
Tested it with a fresh Wine installation, and it works perfectly. I deleted the .wine folder while keeping the Program Files folder, then uninstalled wine with the --purge option using the Aptitude package manager, then re-installed wine as well as DirectX9 using winetricks.
