I downloaded acrord32.exe and tried to install it running "wine acrord32.exe"
but it refused to install. It fails with the error:

err:dosmem:load_winedos Could not load winedos.dll, DOS subsystem unavailable
winevdm: unable to exec '--app-name': 16-bit support missing

Yes, I'm using Ubuntu hardy.

Is there a wine-based solution to this problem that doesn't involve this
workaround? I confess I don't really understand what the current hack does, but
it doesn't seem to me a satisfactory long-term solution, especially for the non
kernel-hacking wine end user.

The hardy wine packages should probably incorporate this
workaround.  Until then, you really do have to do it yourself,
sorry.  You only have to do it once, though.

Hmm, well I used the "sudo sysctl ..." workaround and ran the acrobat 3.02
installer. It all appeared to go well, even showed me the readme file. But
nothing was added to my wine menu, nor is there an Acrobat 3.0/ directory under
Program Files in my wine directory. There are no err: messages on console, just
a bunch of fixmes.

It claims to install but it doesn't. Using wine 0.9.60 on Ubuntu hardy.

+msi,+msidb debug produced no msi messages. Log attached, anyway.

Works here as expected.
You need to search the Files in C:\Acrobat3\Reader\

The Application was out Years before msi appeared.

OK. Well, granted I'm testing in 0.9.60, but I'm definitely the seeing the
"black box where text should be" issue. Maybe this is fixed in git?
