Shogun Total War 2 purchased and installed through Steam plays fine, albeit a little slowly.
However during battles, it shows a message at the bottom, saying something to the effect that the installation has been tampered with, which can be due to pirating or a virus, and then prompting to purchase the game or repair the installation.
I have tried repairing through Steam and reinstalling but the message is still there.

It appears only in the battle screen and does go away after a minute or two. I wonder if its related to Civilization 4 not believing it can find Steam either...
Either way there is no terminal output beyond the normal Steam ones you have. Happy to retest this with debug flags once I know which ones you'd want to see.

As with other users, reinstalling does not fix this, though waiting out the message or hitting escape twice (enter then exit in-game menu) will remove the message, and play can continue as normal. Nothing game breaking, so a low priority bug.

After pirated notification we got kicked out of the game back to steam. You have to start the game again to do another battle. This makes doing an campaign impossible because of the kicking out!

confirming, it's a dupe of bug 32515 (used for collecting CEG-protected games).
The 'piracy' message is decoded at runtime, written to in-memory .png which is displayed as overlay hence you don't see it in cleartext in any binary.

The failing binary the message is talking about: 'Shogun2.dll'
You can verify by re-validating game cache. It should always flag this binary as inconsistent and re-download it.
