--- Comment #2 from kriko kristjan.ugrin@gmail.com 2008-01-06 15:04:31 --- I can confirm this too. Quick challenges are more stable than career mode, but unfortunately sound crashes when starting one (and then at some point game crashes too). Career mode crashes every time at random point.
Crash is same as described with attachment in this thread.

--- Comment #4 from Zach Goldberg zgold550@gmail.com 2008-02-03 00:26:28 --- I've been messing with the demo (available http://www.nfshome.com/demos.php) and have not had a terrible amount of luck.
I have gotten the speedtrap race to work about 5 times in total. Maybe 50 tries; messing with tons of settings/tracks/cars. However; the speedtrap race did work perfectly those 5 times. From stsrt to finish the experience felt near perfect. The game is definetely really close to being perfect.
Other things to note: Installer worked fine Game crashes on video settings change (Rarely) sound would crash but game would continue With some video options the game would start, but output a ton of repeated warnings in STDOUT and the game would run at 1 or 2 FPS. Cannot reproduce now but could do so before i begin messing with stuff.

--- Comment #5 from Zach Goldberg zgold550@gmail.com 2008-02-03 00:43:25 --- Also, brief addendum. Just disabled alsa completely in WINECFG and the races start every time now, on every track with every car. Looks like something sound-wise is the culprit.

This probably screws up other apps, but I've only created it for NFSMW and haven't tested anything else.

--- Comment #7 from Walt H walt_h@lorettotel.net 2008-02-26 18:17:11 --- I've come to a similar conclusion as Zach - disabling sound does allow the game to proceed. I've concocted an ugly hack which allows the game to continue, while still having sound enabled. I've simply ignored the unhandled exceptions :) This mostly works on my setup, although the msvcrt.c patch can occasionally cause the game to lock fully, as the exception appears to cascade. Anyway, above is a small patch which allows the game to be played more fully (on my system anyway).

--- Comment #8 from Julian Rüger jr98@gmx.net 2008-03-09 16:40:38 --- Created an attachment (id=11281) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11281) random (?) crash in nfsmw
Same thing here. Menu works like a charm, but cannot change graphics. Quickrace works after a few tries, but after ~5 min the game crashes. wine 0.9.57, ubuntu 7.04, nvidia gf 7900gtx, glsl used alsa with full hardware accel.
when I use oss, sound crashes and loops the last half second, but I can drive the race, finish it and start new races. sound does not recover until you restart the game, it keeps looping the last played sample.
without sound, quickrace worked fine.

as i said, quickrace worked fine without sound, but when i started a career, i could drive the first race, but after that, during the 2nd video, it crashed again. this looks a lot like the first crash, so i wonder if sound really is the troublemaker at all. at least it makes things worse.

--- Comment #10 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-12-02 09:54:20 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.9 or newer) wine?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9359
--- Comment #11 from Julian Rüger jr98@gmx.net 2008-12-02 15:08:32 --- Yes, it is. I got the last-sample-loop-crash with alsa and short time later the whole game crashed. Tried several times, sometimes you can drive a full race and then again it crashes before you even start.

--- Comment #12 from jake9999 sb.zijlstra@casema.nl 2009-03-18 06:17:06 --- I found a solution that works on my system, which prevents NFSMW from crashing although the sound issue remains.
It seems that even under windows NFSMW seems to have issues running on multi-core systems. Setting the processor affinity to one core fixes the crashes.
I use :taskset -c 0 wine speed.exe

No such problem, 8 cores CPU here and works fine here now. Tested:
* NFS MW v1.3 + crack (has SafeDisc v4.60 :-/) * wine-1.2-rc1-142-ga72f3f3 * nVidia GT240 195.36.24 * kernel 2.6.33.3 (patched ~ bug 20380)
i.e. FIXED.
BTW: Why vendor says OpenGL 3.1 and glxinfo says OpenGL 3.2.0???

It's Gigabytes' overclocked version (written on their pages and also on card's box when i bought it):
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3278#ov
Look for "OpenGL" there.

--- Comment #17 from Henri Verbeet hverbeet@gmail.com 2010-05-28 07:39:02 --- That's probably just what the Windows drivers the card ships with support. It's not uncommon for the GL version to increase over the lifetime of a card, provided of course that the newer GL versions don't require features the card doesn't have.
