Bug ID: 39390 Summary: Backgrounds are black in 99 Spirits Product: Wine Version: 1.7.51 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: funtimeschaos@rocketmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 52501 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52501 Terminal output
All backgrounds fail to render, replaced by plain blackness instead. The terminal doesn't seem to provide much helpful out, but I've attached it regardless.
According to the terminal, this may be a duplicate of 9127, but the normal work around steps (winetricks quartz, wmp10, allcodecs) removed the quartz fixme messages but not the problem.
Would love to put up a more helpful output, if I knew which WINEDEBUG flags to use.

I'm glad you asked, a quick search revealed that a demo is available: http://dl.fruitbatfactory.com/ff/99_Spirits_Trial_Setup.exe
I've also attached a screenshot showing the title screen in WINE vs the title screen on windows to illustrate the problem.

--- Comment #4 from super_man@post.com --- Do you know if the background that is missing is a video clip or static image?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39390
--- Comment #5 from ~J~ funtimeschaos@rocketmail.com --- On the main menu it is animated(so it could be a video clip), however, in other places where the background is also black, it appears static, such as battlegrounds, so if it's a videoclip, it's one that shows a static image.

--- Comment #7 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- winetricks -q quartz devenum wmp10 solves the issue for me making this indeed a dup of bug 9127. But please test it again, in a clean prefix use winetricks and then install the game. In your comment 0 you didn't mention installing devenum.

--- Comment #8 from ~J~ funtimeschaos@rocketmail.com --- Created attachment 52621 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52621 Terminal output after doing "winetricks -q quartz devenum wmp10"
Tested with wine 1.7.52 and clean wineprefix. Done winetricks -q quartz devenum wmp10, then installed the game. The issue is NOT resolved, the backgrounds are still black. I've attached the terminal output, just in case.

--- Comment #9 from super_man@post.com --- winetricks -q quartz devenum wmp10
Doesnt solve me either, but I did those after installing the game. Shouldnt matter in this case?

--- Comment #10 from ~J~ funtimeschaos@rocketmail.com --- When retesting with 1.9.2 staging , winetricks -q quartz devenum wmp10 worked and solved the problem.

--- Comment #11 from winetest@luukku.com --- I made quite interesting observeation.
winetricks -q quartz devenum isn't enough for wine 2.8. But it is enough for staging 2.7. Wmp isn't needed at all. If I use same prefix with that winetricks recipe and run once the program with wine-staging and after that with wine it starts to work with both. Wine-staging modifies registery? But if I run that winetricks recipe and start with wine 2.8 it doesn't work, but after once running with sating it starts to work with wine too.
I think winetricks -q quartz wasnt enough for fixing this, but wmp wasnt needed at all.
I did the testing without sounds on speakers.

--- Comment #12 from ~J~ funtimeschaos@rocketmail.com --- I got it to work, but noticed some very odd behaviors:
1. In a fresh wine prefix, the bug persists. 2. When installing quartz using winetricks in a fresh prefix, the bug persists. 3. When changing the wine version OR force-reinstalling quartz, without changing the prefix, the bug goes away. 4. Once the bug is gone for a prefix, changing the wine version (I've tested staging 3.6, devel 3.7 and stable 3.0) does not bring it back.
When I realized I can get it to work by installing it on devel 3.7 and then switching to stable 3.0 I thought something "under the hood" must be wrong.
Oh well. There's a way to make it work, now.

That's without any overrides or native DLLs, right?
I guess this game really does need the MPEG splitter to support system streams.
