Bug #: 31547 Summary: Mass effect low frame rate since upgrading OS Product: Wine Version: 1.5.11 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: aidygus@yahoo.com Classification: Unclassified
I've recently updated my OS from Ubuntu 10.04 to mint 13 with cinnamon desktop.
I since then mass effect is suffering from cripplingly slow framerates on the first "Press a key" plane screen, menus and general game play. The game intro and jump-gate splash screen run at normal rates.
I've tried reinstalling steam in a clean prefix with only mass effect in steam but the same result. No other steam games are effected and run at full FPS.
I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 570, the latest Nvidia drivers and in ubuntu 10.04 the game runs at full speed with all settings on no matter what's on screen.

Doesn't make any difference. That was one of the first things I tried.
In ubuntu 10.04 it ran brilliantly with motion blur turned on.

--- Comment #4 from Raath aidygus@yahoo.com 2012-09-10 03:03:58 CDT --- I found a work around for this problem.
When I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to mint 13 I had the 64 bit OS but I was downloading and compiling the 32 bit wine.
I've not managed to get 32 bit wine to compile under mint so I had the default wine from the repo which is the 64 bit wine. When I recreated the prefix it creatd a 64 bit wrapper and there appears to be major problems with it compared to the 32 bit.
I installed unbuntu 10.04 alongside mint and attempted to run steam but it was telling me that it couldn't run the 64 bit version under 32 bit wine.
Recreating the prefix, ME worked perfect under the 32 bit wine so I booted up into mint and with the 32 bit prefix ME ran fine in that also.
So the problem like I said was caused by the 64 bit prefix. This may also be the cause of other issues I've noticed in other steam games I have.
