Summary: EVE-Online does not run with ATi 4870x2; DirectX failure? Product: Wine Version: 1.1.7 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com
I managed to get EVE-Online working okay using onboard nVidia hardware this summer, using the Classic version. However, I bought a nice new video card (ATi chipset), and upgraded wine at the same time (I had it working, sorta, with a pre-1.0.x version; this but applies to >=1.0.x). Now EVE will not load. I get the splash screen, and the following generic errors:
wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} could be created for context 0x1 fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on HDA ATI HDMI, disabling mixer
Then ExeFile.exe stops running, and I'm back where I started.
If I re-install the game fresh, I do get to a login screen, but there are no ships (just the flame trails behind them). I am told to install a patch. At the end of the patching process, the patcher says it needs to reboot. I click okay: and the program closes, but nothing happens.
It seems - from what I'm being told by an ATi dev on this thread:
http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13211&page=4
that this is a problem with direct rendering. Can the wine devs please let me know if they can duplicate this problem? Contrary to the report on the AppDB, a lot of people are having problems with this game.
Thanks,

--- Comment #1 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2009-01-01 08:17:11 --- EVE is now running (sorta) on my box. Upgrading to the 2.6.28 kernel allows the game to run, but it will not load any textures (ie, ships, stations, objects, etc). This is apparently a problem specific to 64-bit gentoo users, as you can see in the AppDB forum.
However, while one user has it working, mine is still not fully functional. Can one of the devs give tips on how to get textures to load? So I can see, you know, all the objects. I'll post screencaps shortly.
Thanks,

--- Comment #2 from Sven Dack sven.dack@ntlworld.com 2009-07-02 10:21:00 --- See the EVE Linux forum, too.
EVE had a few problems of its own after the "Apocrypha" extension with models not showing for example. Try using the latest EVE version/patch and upgrade to WINE 1.1.24 - it fixes some graphics issues with various ATI and NVidia cards.

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-06-04 15:43:46 --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 11 months. Is this still an issue in current (1.2-rc2 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #4 from evanh evanh@clear.net.nz 2010-06-20 06:31:40 --- Eve, Wine and the ATI driver have all evolved. Bugs have come and gone in 18 months, there's nothing specific listed here ... close it.

Sorry for the sloppy wording in previous post.
Close bug please.
Have you tested EVE-Online with an ATI 4870 with wine-1.2-rc4 or latest git?

--- Comment #7 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2010-06-22 03:49:26 --- My solution to this bug was to buy an nVidia card, which I did a couple years ago.
As evanh pointed out, EVE has also undergone numerous updates, so there's no way to say the latest version works or not with this particular card without testing it (which I can no longer do).
Unless some other user has this card, I see no reason to keep the bug open.
Cheers.
