Summary: English/Portuguese/Spanish dictionary Product: Wine Version: 0.9.54. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: rbrguard2005-who@yahoo.com.br CC: rbrguard2005-who@yahoo.com.br
Hi! I frequently use the Multilingual dictionary called "Dic Michaelis" (AppDB: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=3200&sA...), which is the only electronic english to portuguese dictionary I could possibly find, for any OS (except some very poor online translators).
I have it installed on Ubuntu 6.06 with wine 0.9.53~winehq0~ubuntu~6.06-1, and it works perfectly; probably the program was installed with some previous wine version, however still runs smoothly with wine 0.9.53 .
The problem is, I'm actually using latest Ubuntu (7.10) with the most recent wine (version 0.9.54~winehq0~ubuntu~7.10-1) but the following problems occur:
* There are now actually two "programs" in the taskbar; the first one contains the main body of the dictionary; the second, when clicked, displays the search word field;
* Whenever I switch from english/portuguese to portuguese/english and vice-versa, the search box disappears and I need to select it again in the taskbar;
* When the application is minimized, or another application such as firefox is chosen, the main body minimizes, but the search box remains over all the other programs I have open i.e. browser etc.; So the only solution I have at the time is closing the dictionary application every time after searching for the translation; this can be quite annoying.
* Everytime I switch between applications I have to click again in the second "program" in the taskbar so I can enter the search word. Because of the nature of the activity (browsing foreign language, using translator) this happens quite frequently.
SUMMARY: this issue is not a priority, however it did not happened in prior versions of wine (except when minimizing the search box remained in top of everything else) and I assume it happens with other applications also.
I'm attaching a photo so you can see what I'm talking about :)
THANK YOU AND I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR WORK!

Please run a regression test: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
The application worked under Ubuntu 6.06 and even wine 0.9.53, however, for the same wine 0.9.53 under Ubuntu 7.10 it doesn't work, I think because the application was originally installed in Ubuntu 6.06 (which is installed in another partition) before a wine upgrade to 0.9.53, that is, the application was installed under a previous wine, which I suppose was released around October 2006. Therefore, I tried to install wine 0.9.23 from source (since there is no package for Ubuntu 7.10, I suppose using package from Ubuntu 6.06 would break the system?) but when try to run wine get "segmentation fault". Tryed also from source wine 0.9.22 but same problem.
So I returned to wine 0.9.23 and, according to the readme file, must be compiled using gcc 2.7.2.3. So I installed gcc-2.7.2.3-19 available from the Ubuntu package repository; I made the necessary changes so the compiler used is actually gcc-2.7.2.3. Nevertheless, I can't go further, when execute 'make' I get the erros some erros, please see the attached file: erros while doing 'make' - wine 0.9.23.

--- Comment #5 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-02-09 15:03:11 --- Why are you compiling wine-0.9.23? You said the regression is from wine-0.9.53 Yes mostlikely you can't compile such an old Wine version and there is nothing we can do about it.
Please stick to the original problem. If you have some problems with installing this application on new Wine versions in your new distro version - open new bug.

As I said, on wine 0.9.53, under Ubuntu 7.10 kernel 2.6.22-14-generic THE PROBLEM IS PRESENT. Under Ubuntu 6.06 and wine 0.9.53 the problem was not present, however the application "Dic Michaelis" was installed on a very previous wine version. As I'm new to linux I can only imagine that the reason for the same wine 0.9.53 version works for Ubuntu 6.06 but not for Ubuntu 7.10 is that the application "Dic Michaelis" was installed under a previous wine version.
I'll try to test with an old but not so old wine version. I apologize if I didn't made myself clear.

Hey guys,
I went to Ubuntu 6.06, uninstalled wine 0.9.53 completely and reinstalled. Without doing any changes to winecfg (just looked without changing, windows version was set to Windows 2000) I installed Dic Michaelis; for my surprise, the application was still running smoothly... why that's a problem? because in Ubuntu 7.10, the same wine 0.9.53 version with the same configuration (windows 2000 etc) doesn't work! I tryed changing to window$ XP and Window$ 98 but the problem still continues.
I suppose the long hard work of regression testing has no use because the same version of wine has different behaviors in different (kernels?). Besides, it would not be possible determine what patch (if any) caused the regression, because I can't really know if the application ever worked fine in Ubuntu 7.10! Please give me directions. Tks.
