Working around Bug 22679 with a native msxml3, the Photoshop CS5 installer exits with error code (-1).

Seems like it's having some trouble running some custom code after install the vc90 redistributable. The +relay gets huge, and there are a ton of similar payload's, so I'm having trouble figuring out what it's doing here exactly.
I found a few similar problems on Adobe's forums: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/604266 https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-26442 https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-26538
which seem to indicate that there may be a problem if the install path has spaces, so I tried putting them in ~/.wine/drive_c/cs5, but that didn't help.
I'll attach the adobe log, perhaps it may give a better clue.

The installer for Photoshop CS6 Beta (availiable for download from Adobe Labs) gives the same error at about the same time in the installation process as for CS5 (when it should begin to copy files). "err:ole:CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from apartment threaded to multi-threaded" This might be caused by the same underlying error.
Note: in order to come this far in the installation process native msxml3 is needed.

The installer complains you don't meet the system requirements unless you run with e.g. 'winetricks win7', but will run anyway.
When the installer quits, a log is saved in c:/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Adobe/Installers/Adobe After Effects CS5 10 $date.log.gz
and on my run just now (done after winetricks vcrun2008 vcrun2005 vcrun2010) the first hint of error was for vc80:

The main installer communicates to sub-installer over named pipes (IPC) with some proprietary XML protocol/payload.
There are a few occurrences where corrupted (shortened?) packets are reported: "DWANative - Received Invalid packet". After exceeding the threshold of 4 bad packets, the installer bails.
Debugging the installer made the error appear much later (timing/race?).
The installer contains some trace capability. Create the following empty files:

This switches the verbosity to level 6.
The main log file is 'C:\users\focht\Temp\PDApp.log'.

I cherry picked/rebased some patches from Wine-Staging (formerly Wine-Compholio) 'namedpipe' branch: https://github.com/wine-compholio/wine-staging/tree/namedpipe/patches/kernel... to Wine 1.7.31+ and it made the CS5 installer succeed in clean 32-bit WINEPREFIX.
Although (meta)bug 17195 is now kind of a mess, resolving as dupe.
Refining summary to capture all Adobe CS5 installers.
$ wine --version wine-1.7.31-109-g9e23620
