Bug ID: 40834 Summary: Steam for windows, used on a linux OS, using WINE to run, hardly works at all, I don't know why. Product: Wine Version: 1.9.12 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: cherrytreesforever@yahoo.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 54796 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=54796 this is from the crash report I have no idea what it says
Upon launching steam using WINE I get a crash report. I saved it, you can read up on it. Basically using Linux Zorin I am, the UI is horribly glitchy and the entire app is completely unusable. The only reason I need to use a windows version of steam should be obvious: Windows games and all. Anyways, I am not sure about this bug, nor do I know enough about linux to provide much more info, other than the saved doc with the error imprinted in it from the report itself.

--- Comment #4 from cherrytreesforever@yahoo.com --- First of all that was as high as your version list would go (then you need to update your own version list) secondly, no, I'm not running this on windows, I'm running it on linux zorin core 9. So please don't end this ticket. Besides even after a recent update (linux updated wine by itself before running steam) results are still the same... its a blocker because its so severe that Steam simply will not work at all anymore after a restart. Sometimes won't work at all the second its installed. Not sure why.

--- Comment #5 from cherrytreesforever@yahoo.com --- 1.6.2 was the version it was the upon first launch, but Linux Zorin did update wine later on after I installed the updates linux has, but it didn't matter cuz results were still the same even after. I guess I'll have to post a more recent bug report then. Later today I'll give you a more recent updated text file...

I thought wine was for running windows apps on linux.... somehow this issue is confused.... why would anyone use wine on windows? We don't need it on windows I thought.... oh well...

--- Comment #9 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net --- Setting version field back to the original reported version. That field should not be changed; when updating, simply leave a comment that the problem is still present in the newer version.
You still need to retest in 1.9.21 or later and if the problem is still present, attach the full terminal output.

I think the version field should be updated in a case that the report is opened against really outdated wine and the next test is done with more recent. He just used too old wine at report time and the bug isnt an old one.
Bugs should be opened against wine-development version. Because wine offers also 1.8 stable it makes things a bit more complicated. 1.8 series of stable might have bugs that are already fixed at 1.9 series. And reporting against 1.8 would still be valid.
If people would really test against development version of wine this would prevent lots of bugs to be created that are already fixed.
Always reporting against development version would make the fixes eventually land in next stable and also the regressions would have been already fixed in development version and not in stable. If people would be active.

The wine version should be the first known version with the bug.

--- Comment #12 from cherrytreesforever@yahoo.com --- Well this is the case. (I thought this ticket was over--I'm glad it is not). I could spend several hours downloading games on the windows version of steam. When I have playonlinux going, it says steam for windows needs to be installed. So it installs it. Most of the time everything works in the UI for steam for windows (under wine) until I restart Linux. Then for some reason when linux boots back up, everything in the steam (windows version) is broken. The entire UI is non-functional, and all the games are dead in the dirt. Its like (each time after linux starts) I have to re-open PlayOnLinux, have it reinstall steam for windows, then re-download all the games just to play in that session. I just know something isn't right, and since WINE is suppose to make windows apps work on steam, I feel this is somehow an issue related to WINE. I'm not really sure who else to go to, since Steam support tells me Steam for windows does not run on Linux unless its ran through WINE. I know there is a version of Steam for linux, but no windows games can be downloaded or bought for the Linux version of Steam. I hope I was more detailed this time. I re-reviewed my last posts and I didn't think I was clear enough. Sorry about that.
The UI breaks, Everything is forgotten, games no longer work (click the links to say "South Park Stick Of Truth (for windows)" game does nothing. Click the steam icon for windows version of steam--steam loads, but the UI is nothing at all. It is still doing it. tested in 1.9.21... It just won't do what it is suppose to. So still I'm stuck using Microsoft windows to run windows games on windows and the windows version of steam on windows--forever I am stuck with windows :( ---- I really would love to switch to Linux SOOOOOO BADLY!!! :( Its just too bad games are always produced by windows. But thankfully you guys help make Wine so great and others work on PlayOnLinux--hopefully in the future these two software will be so good we all can play our windows games on linux...
Anyways. I hope this issue is resolved soon. I will test again next version.
P.S. I don't like windows...

--- Comment #13 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- We don't support PlayonLinux, try in 1.9.21, with a clean wineprefix.

--- Comment #14 from cherrytreesforever@yahoo.com --- PlayOnLinux uses wine to install steam though I thought.

PlayOnLinux uses wine to install steam though I thought.
PlayOnLinux scripts often add unnecessary overrides, use unsupported patches, and/or obsolete Wine versions. They often cause problems that do not exist in plain Wine.
If you are incapable of running the Steam installer on your own, use winetricks to install it.

--- Comment #16 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr --- Clearly INVALID. The OP used PlayOnLinux. And no answer from the OP since 4 years and tons of bug for steam are reported already.
Can an administrator close this bug as INVALID?
