Using wine-1.2-rc2, the patched version of Gothic II: tNotR (2.6) and a NoCD-fix (german; Gothic2.exe and ar.exe are changed), I can start the game and load my savegames, so the game works. I have to click away some error windows titled "SmartHeap Library" with the message "MEM_BAD_POINTER" (since wine-1.1.43; I think I should create a bug report about that..) and the Program Error window informing me that Vdfs32g.exe crashed. soundEnabled=1 in System/Gothic.ini works, musicEnabled=1 seems to cause an "Application Error" window although the .dlls are in place.
When I try to run the same version of Gothic II without a NoCD-fix - then with the original CD of course - nothing happens, not any line of terminal output.
I'm not sure about the following: When you get to the intro videos but the game crashes shortly afterwards, delete or rename your Gothic.ini and let the game create a new one. I did so and switching between the old and new .inis shows that only the new one works. It might be another setting I made though.. but maybe that's it.
I get similar behaviours than you with wine 1.2. I think that the focus of this bug should be changed; it is possible to start the game if you mess up with the .ini configuration file. But it is not possible to start the game with "vanilla" settings.
