Summary: Problem setting resolution in Neverwinter Nights 2 Product: Wine Version: 0.9.54. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-ddraw AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: torbm@yahoo.com
When starting Neverwinter Nights 2 in fullscreen in-game settings for resolution is ignored and always defaults to 1400x1050 (witch is not a valid resolution in x-org.conf but happens anyway). There is no in-game way of changing this resolution either.
I have found that I can change the games resolution by alt-tab out of the game and set the desired resolution in nvidia x server configuration tool and then alt-tab back into the game. I use Kubuntu (Kde) and this way of fixing the problem has been reported by another user not to work with his gnome desktop. We are both at version 7.10 of (K)Ubuntu.
Neverwinter Nights 2 w/Mask of the Betrayer expansion, patched to version 1.11.1152 Bug has been evident since I strated fiddling with this in version .52 of wine

--- Comment #1 from Richie listmail@triad.rr.com 2008-02-12 17:04:13 --- I can confirm this bug.
I would like to add that (as far as what resolutions are selectable in game) when setting wine to emulate a virutal desktop, only then will you start to see other resolutions listed under NWN2's graphics settings tab.
When the virtual desktop is enabled (unless you had a frameless window manager or the like) then running the game in "full screen" becomes out of the question.
I will attach wine debug outputs for when emulate is off versus when it is on. Perhaps variances in the output could shed some light on this.

--- Comment #6 from Szymon Janc szymon@janc.int.pl 2008-03-19 16:05:03 --- Have similar problem with Neverwinter Nights (one, not two). Witout virtual desktop a can set max resolution to 1280x768. With virtual desktop I can set (and play normally) resolution to 1680x1050 (which is my monitor's native resolution).
I've also noticed simmilar issue with some of the 3dmarks before. I don't remember which at the moment, but can test it if such info would have helped.

--- Comment #17 from Javier Kohen jkohen@users.sourceforge.net 2010-11-10 01:20:07 CST --- I've done the xrandr dump. Turns out the game is picking the resolution at 60 Hz. Some background is in order: NVidia uses a weird hack that gives each xrandr resolution a sequential index, which it encodes in the refresh rate field. This refresh rate is fake, but the game doesn't know that.
To override this behavior, edit the nwn2.ini file in your "My Documents" directory (the exact location varies according to wine configuration, but it should be the XDG Documents directory) and set the RefreshRate to 50 (at least for me it's the lowest index and it corresponds to the native resolution) and the resolution to the desired value.
I'm not sure there's much Wine could do in this case that isn't a game specific hack. This bug is caused by broken behavior both on part of nVidia and the game.
Reporting with Wine 1.3.5.

--- Comment #19 from Xavier Vachon xvachon@gmail.com 2013-04-23 13:28:07 CDT --- In current wine (1.5.28), the GOG.com version of Neverwinter nights 2 requires overrides 'dxdiagn', 'devenum' and 'd3dx9_36' to run. With these, I am able to change the resolution without problems either in fullscreen or virtual desktop modes.

Winetricks prerequisites : - dxdiagn (https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34686)
I am able to switch between resolutions without problems either if I use a virtual desktop or not. I can't switch to all the possible 4:3 and 16:9 resolutions between 1400*1050 and 1920*1080 however if I use a virtual desktop. This could be a limitation of the wine VD. My max resolution is 1920*1080, so this is not a problem for me.

Can you test a patch if I add the missing modes into wine code? But you need to tell me the video modes that don't work with VD.

I'm using Windows 10 now and don't have Linux or Wine built in my current setup, so I won't be able to test that.
