Summary: New version of Mplus (5.2) does not work under wine Product: Wine Version: 1.1.7 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: gg.alex.weiss@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=17848) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=17848) Message I get when trying to run Mplus 5.2 under wine
I am a user of Mplus, a statistical software package. For some time and from versions 4.2 to 5.1, I successfully ran Mplus under wine in Linux. Unfortunately, the newest version (5.2) no longer runs under wine.
I contacted the authors of Mplus and they indicated that the problem appears to have arisen due to their use of the latest version of the Intel Fortran compiler (10.1.025).
At present, I am using version 5.1 of Mplus, though it would be nice to be able to use the more recent version.
If any more information is needed, I can ask the people who produce Mplus; they are quite good about supporting their product and this would likely benefit them as well.

Also, I am using wine-1.1.7 which was compiled under gcc 4.1.2 p1.1.
The command I ran was: wine /opt/Mplus_5.2/Mplus.exe

Also, I run wine 1.1.7 which was compiled under gcc 4.1.2.
It's probably worth trying with Wine 1.1.10 to see if it changes anything.

--- Comment #8 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-12-12 08:48:11 --- Please do the following: 1. Make sure you have debug symbols for Wine installed. If you can't find them, compile Wine yourself from the source and run it from compile dir 2. Run your program in this way:
winedbg Mplus.exe .... Wine-dbg>cont ....exception... Wine-dbg>bt all Wine-dbg>exit
And attach (as a text file) complete terminal output of the above.

Thus, if this is not sufficient, I will have to wait until I return home. However, hopefully this isn't the case as the program I wish to run is not one that uses a GUI or any other graphics.

--- Comment #16 from Louis Lenders xerox_xerox2000@yahoo.co.uk 2009-01-17 16:09:54 --- Is there a way to reproduce the bug with the demo from http://www.statmodel.com/demo.shtml ?
If so, provide exact steps howto trigger the bug please. thx

--- Comment #17 from Alex Weiss gg.alex.weiss@gmail.com 2009-01-18 07:50:30 --- I tried running that and I get a different (more detailed) output, though it still isn't working. I suspect the underlying problem is the same as the demo just limits the number of variables, etc. that the user has access to.
To get it to work, I installed the program under windows and then copied the files over to my linux box's /opt/ folder (I used this same procedure to install prior versions of Mplus and it worked flawlessly as there are no hidden files, etc.)
Next I would try to use Mplus to run an example analysis (I will send you what I ran via email). Simply use the following command:
wine /opt/Mplus\ Demo/Mpdemo5.exe
Upon the prompt, I then typed in ex3.1.inp
The results of doing this are as follows:
Mplus VERSION 5.2 DEMO MUTHEN & MUTHEN

--- Comment #34 from Mikko Rönkkö mikko.ronkko@iki.fi 2010-06-18 07:53:43 --- I did some testing and this seems to be related to file writing. The software opens a file for output, but seems to crash when it tries to write to this file.
I am attaching results of running the 5.1 and 6 versions of the software with WINEDEBUG=+relay
The 6.0 version first prints six lines to screen and then crashes when it tries to write to the output file. I assume that these 7 lines are 6 lines to stdout and one failed write attempt to the results file.

The one error line in the 5.1 output is due to using empty analysis file and is part of the correct behavior of the software.
Since the error occurs during writing of the results file header, which is unrelated to the analysis results, my guess is that the bug is related to file writing.
The proper component for this is probably NTDLL, but I could be wrong.

Two log files where older versions of Mplus run correctly and Two log files where the latest version fails.
These are run against Wine compiled from git version.

mpdzip.exe is the installer
You can get the crash by following the instructions in comment # 29

--- Comment #40 from Mikko Rönkkö mikko.ronkko@iki.fi 2010-06-28 08:30:40 --- I emailed the Mplus developers and asked a few questions about the licenses and possibility to let Wine developers have access to a licensed copy of Mplus.
If it helps in fixing wine, I got a permission to give a wine developer access to my copy of Mplus 5.1 (which works flawlessly). Please drop me an email to mikko.ronkko@tkk.fi, if this would help.
How can I change the component of this bug to NTDLL?

I emailed the Mplus developers and asked a few questions about the licenses and possibility to let Wine developers have access to a licensed copy of Mplus.
I have a test case using four different versions of Mplus ready. Also, I got a permission from Mplus developers to give this test case that contains two full versions of Mplus for Wine developers if that helps in fixing the issue discussed in this bug report. If any developer is interested in taking a look, you can email me and then I can transfer the test case over.

--- Comment #44 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com 2012-03-05 20:59:27 CST --- Unfortunately the 5.2 version is no longer available, and the newer version 6 works in wine.
Can anyone provide a legal link to a demo version of 5.2?
Is this still a problem in latest wine version?
