When attempting to install the v1.1 patch
(ftp://ftp.ubi.com/us/games/darkmessiah/heroes_might_magic_5_us_101.exe) or the
v1.2 patch
(ftp://ftp.ubi.com/us/games/darkmessiah/heroes_might_magic_5_1.02_us.exe) onto
the retail CD (1.0) version of Heroes V, the installer reports that "Heroes of
Might and Magic V is not installed. Patch cannot be applied."

I have installed the game correctly from the CD-ROM and have not applied any
no-CD fixes, and when looking at the registry, everything seems to be in order.
