Bug ID: 35481 Summary: Failure to install a Windows program and apparently a political issue Product: Wine Version: unspecified Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: alan@asandco.co.uk Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 47367 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=47367 screen print of the error message
After successfully installing wine 1.6.1 from the Mageia 4 RC repository to an Asus netbook and installing a Windows program from a 1996 cover CD, I decided that I needed a larger drive an more RAM.
When both were installed and the system re-installed from the same DVD, I again installed wine 1.6.1 (including qtwine version 1.0 and again attempted to install the same program.
It failed with two results, an error window displaying:
"The program winevdm.exe encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
but more surprisingly, the browser came up with this url.
http://q4wine.brezblock.org.ua/documentation/q4wine_en_gb/05-first-steps.htm...
This is a political message. Does this mean wine is now held hostage?
I was able to reproduce this effect a second time.

--- Comment #1 from Ken Thomases ken@codeweavers.com --- I suspect that URL comes from the Windows program you were trying to run, perhaps shortly before it crashed. Given the content of the web page vs. the URL itself, it seems that it used to have Wine-related content (not from the Wine project but from the developer of that Windows software) but the developer felt the need to change it to a political message.
I googled for "q4wine" since that's mentioned in the URL. That lead to http://sourceforge.net/projects/q4wine/ which seems like a legitimate project for use with Wine. If you follow the "q4wine Web Site" link in the Description, you are taken to http://q4wine.brezblock.org.ua/ which shows that same political message (since it's the same host as the original suspect URL).

--- Comment #2 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- When you first run q4wine it shows that page in the browser. I think it's not related to the application. q4wine is a third party app to create wine prefixes.

--- Comment #4 from Alan Secker alan@asandco.co.uk --- The web page has been confirmed as related to qtwine and not to wine itself. The error though has been reproduced. The terminal output follows:

What is the name of the program? Is it legally available anywhere for download?
The program I needed was on a cover CD supplied with PC Magazine December 1996.It could not be installed except through the general menu system on the CD. That had to be attained by launching GO.EXE. That did indeed come up but when I selected the program that I wanted - COMMENCE.EXE and clicked 'Install' it failed with the error message shown earlier.
I would repeat that when I tried it using the original SSD on the Asus PC901 netbook, it installed flawlessly. Same operating system. Same version.
As for legality, the publishers website is http://www.commence.com/. Being a US developer, I believe that they have 70 years copyright protection. The 'help' dialog claims copyright 1988-1996 whatever that means.

--- Comment #7 from Alan Secker alan@asandco.co.uk --- I have since found the underlying program (commence.exe) on the CD and have successfully installed it, followed by MSWorks, so I think this was a storm in a teacup. I am marking it RESOLVED.
