Summary: Prototype: Fails to start Product: Wine Version: 1.1.23 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: lukasz.wojnilowicz@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=21871) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=21871) Wine-1.1.23
I'm using Wine 1.1.23 (compiled from source using gcc version 4.4.0 20090506 (Red Hat 4.4.0-4) ) on Fedora 11 i386.
The problem is that game crashes in the begging. It shows something about registered trademarks and then probably intro movie should start (i can skip or get crash) and then game makes first save which is failed because crash occurs.
Additional info: ORM=fbo (backbuffer also causes crash) GFX: NVIDIA 9xxx (drivers 185.18.14) during crash: memory 160.1MB and VirtualMemory 2.7GB
I did "winetricks directx9 xact vcrun2005sp1" because application showed error about Xaudio2 and msvcp80

App didn't spit out backtrace after the last line I run app just by "wine prototypef >& output.txt"
Also disable pulseaudio.
I do have sound ingame. I know the only way to disable pulseaudio is to uninstall it but i won't do it.

I'm not using PulseAudio, just plain ALSA.
Also on my settee the game hangs and doesn't exit until killed :(
I tried by using saved games from windows installation without any further success.

Prototype will crash under wine 1.3.16. Where it crashes is dependent on pulseaudio being enabled or not on the host.
If pulseaudio is enabled on the host, even without the unoffical pulseaudio patch, it will crash after the copyright screen during the opening movie.
if pulseaudio is not enabled on the host, it will crash at the main menu after the Auto Save warning.
I attached two logs one with pulseaudio enabled on the host and one without.
Both logs were generated without the pulseaudio patch compiled into wine.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18987
--- Comment #15 from hibbsncc1701@yahoo.com 2011-10-02 22:47:28 CDT --- Ask and you shall receive. Unfortunately it's still messing up with the movies activated. (i.e the movies folder or movies.rcf file is not removed.) Any attempt to play them will still cause wine to crash. If they are disabled the game will run now, but it is a MAJOR drawback as the movies are a part of the games storyline and gameplay. (You actually have to hunt down a few of them)
This next bit should be a different bug report but I'll put it here for the sake of a complete report, the game is barely running even if the movies are disabled, no sound and the game's renderer is glitches up badly.
I've attached the console log for when the movies are enabled but I don't see why it matters considering that even if it's badly messed up the game will run. (The point of the bug report being that it won't.)

--- Comment #18 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
confirming.
Prerequisite: 'XAudio2_3.dll' -> bug 36847
Kind of hit and miss. There are runs with the intro/ingame videos and gameplay fine (no crash). Sometimes it just crashes.
I've also seen a crash due to heap corruption once, triggered by D3D (probably not the originator).
There are also various crash reports for Windows. It is likely that the game itself is just bugged.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary|Prototype doesn't run |Some games using BINK |reliably |engine v1.9x crash randomly | |on intro video playback | |(Prototype, Driver: San | |Francisco)
--- Comment #19 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
refining summary since bug 28545 ("Driver: San Francisco - Fails to launch") also references this bug.
"Driver: San Francisco" was mentioned in #wine-staging with +relay being a "workaround":
--- quote --- ... some game which crashes but works with relay, seems like some stack corruption it uses the bink32 video decoding lib in async mode and randomly crashes during the video decoding ... if you enable snoop, you will see that it does async decoding the game provides buffers to the decoder thread which seems to decode the frame with ESI as source and EDI as destination while the game thread waits for the frame --- quote ---
"Driver: San Francisco" uses Bink engine 1.99d
--- snip --- Base=10000000 Size=0004A000 (303104.) Entry=10002240 binkw32.<ModuleEntryPoint> Name=binkw32 File version=1.99d Path=C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Driver San Francisco\binkw32.dll --- snip ---
BINK changelog (just for reference): http://www.radgametools.com/bnkhist.htm
Renaming the directory containing the movies also works around:
--- snip --- "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Driver San Francisco\Common\fmv" --- snip ---
All videos can be properly played back with "Rad Video Tools". The tools are statically linked with BINK (never ship with binkw32 dll). Tested with 1.99n, 1.994e, 1.995c.
---
"Prototype" uses Bink engine 1.9h
--- snip --- Base=18000000 Size=00037000 (225280.) Entry=180024F0 binkw32.<ModuleEntryPoint> Name=binkw32 File version=1.9h Path=C:\Program Files\Prototype\binkw32.dll --- snip ---
Unfortunately that game behaves even more randomly, with +relay "workaround" not helping every time (heap corruption seems to be also involved here = multiple bugs?).

1 - Extract content of movies.rcf with ScarfaceExplorer in prototype folder (is one root folder named movies).
2 - Rename movies.rcf
3 - Go in "movies" folder just extracted and rename "activisionRadicalLogos.bik".
Done. No more crash at intro video. In game cutscene work as well (or should be work).
4 - If you have graphics glitches in main menu, rename "fe_ambientMovie_1.bik" and maybe "fe_ambientMovie_start.bik"
No more glitches in main menu.
