Summary: Adobe Acrobat Pro 6 -- cannot Create PDF from file(s) Product: Wine Version: 0.9.58. Platform: All OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jens@porup.com
Selecting File --> Create PDF prompts you for a file. After selecting an MS Word document, a msgbox appears:
Need to Install additional files to create PDF from this file. Do you want to run Acrobat Installer in repair mode?
Click yes: box disappears: nothing happens.
The same thing happens when attempting to Create PDF --> From Multiple Files
A note on file type: selecting OpenOffice .odt files gives you a "file type not known" error, but selecting .doc's gives you the msgbox above, so it's reasonable to conclude Acrobat Pro knows how to convert .doc's to pdf.

--- Comment #1 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-04-11 17:54:06 --- It may require having ms office installed...

--- Comment #2 from foobard jens@porup.com 2008-04-11 18:44:05 --- You may be correct. I tested this with a jpeg image and the pdf is created successfully.
Is this still a bug? Perhaps Acrobat Pro relies on some sort of Windows feature for this and not MS Office.

Install it in a clean windows install without MS office and see if it works. If so, yes, it's a valid bug, if not, invalid. I'm leaning towards the latter.

--- Comment #4 from foobard jens@porup.com 2008-04-11 22:20:45 --- Well, when I run Acrobat Pro 6 in Windows, with MS Office installed, I get dialog boxes saying "loading the application that created the document". So yes, Acrobat Pro is loading and using Microsoft Word as part of the conversion process.
Question: how should wine respond to this sort of feature? Should it look for a wine-based MS Office install? Should it give a message indicating the nature of the error? Should it attempt to fool Acrobat Pro by loading, say, OpenOffice instead? How, exactly, does Acrobat Pro use Microsoft Word code to convert documents?

Wine should act as windows does. If they're both installed in the same WINEPREFIX and this works under windows, then it should work in wine...Are they in two different prefixes?

I don't know. How would I find out?
I'm using a plain vanilla user-land install of wine on Ubuntu. As I'm not a developer I try to avoid fiddling with black magic unless I have to.

ls ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/
Should show both apps. Unless you explicitly did otherwise, they should both be in there...

Similar if not quite identical bug in Acrobat Pro 7.
Attempting to create a pdf from a .doc file pops up the msgbox:
Unable to find "Adobe PDF" resource files.
Do you want to run the installer in repair mode?
clicking OK causes the msgbox to go away, but then nothing happens.
