--- Comment #10 from ben b.fairall@Tesco.net 2007-10-21 12:45:56 --- Yes I have the same bug, everything works fine except the fact messages can not be sent or recived. You can see the text you are about to send but not your message or any replies.
The friends tab works fine and you can join other games ect
I did wonder if it was the the font not being included, but I am not even sure if my message got sent.
The Steam overlay does not work in game as-wel.
I did open steam in terminal to see if an error was given at the time the message was sent and it seemed no error was reported at the time or for about 30 seconds after pressing send.
Shame you can not use the old steam friends as I am sure that would have worked fine :(
My System specs that I get this problems on are
Ubuntu Gusty 32bit, steam installed via wine doors. AMD 3500+ 1GB Corsair XMS2 7900GS ASUS M2 VM mobo
It is strange that this is the only report of the bug I can find on the WWW, I thought it would be a bigger issue or have some people got it working?

Then either use 0.9.39 version of wine, or submit a patch for review.
If reverting back didn't cause other more important applications to break than I would. And if I knew anything about developing Wine, you bet I would submit a patch.
I don't see why this bug hasn't been given more attention, seeing as something after 0.9.39 caused it in the first place.

I can see two problems here (no chat messages appearing and unable to search for users), and I see that wine-0.9.39 appears to work (for one of those, or both?).
With both 0.9.39 and latest Git I see both of those problems.
I was going to regression test but can't find any working version.

As far as I can tell this is the problem:
Instant messages are neither sent or received. I am not sure if it is a net issue, or UI issue, because when someone tries to start a voice conversation (from their end), I can hear it ring on my end but I have no idea who it is from and no window pops up.
It could be that it isn't a regression, may be an issue that came about when the Steam Community was released (Sept 15, 2007).

--- Comment #24 from Josh josh@devxt.com 2007-11-10 04:10:23 --- I'm having the same issues personally and have considered it to possibly be a font issue because I know the people I am sending the message to are receiving it. I sent a message to my dad telling him to call me because I couldn't see messages and he called. So I am guessing that its an issue based around that, I haven't run an API spy on the chat window any but I can bet its probably some proprietary kind of rich text deal. If that is the case then I imagine it won't be too easy of a fix for the great developers at wine.
Good luck but for me, I'll just sign off steam friends and deal with it and keep watching here until its confirmed as working again.

My friends are getting the messages. On occasion, I can see what I type and have a normal conversation with my friend. My notifications pop up and everything, then it stops working suddenly. If I wait long enough, the messages start popping up randomly. I can also confirm that the terminal does not give any error messages. Also, turning compiz on or off has no effect on the problem.

--- Comment #29 from Will Robertson kassah@gmail.com 2007-12-02 15:57:31 --- I have tried both workarounds (downgrade to 0.9.39 and turn off all friends pop-up notifications) with no success. When I did boot up a second steam on windows for testing, I was able to send messages to it from the wine'd steam. And occassionally (seemingly randomly) some older message would show up in the wine'd steam.
A seemingly unrelated problem, but seeming to be an aspect of this bug, is that when I change statuses on the Steam Client, they don't have any visual effect to the list. Nor do friends logging in and out.
Thanks, Will

--- Comment #34 from Josh josh@devxt.com 2007-12-18 09:16:24 --- I've upgraded to 0.9.51 and Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy x64. All issues still the same and just wondering if anyone has any more of a lead on this? I noticed with Gnome I can "Sometimes" see messages when in a chat, but not often.. I never get messages that were initiated with me without me opening a chat with them first though.
I think its an issue with the way steam tries to raise a new IM window, I'm not exactly sure what their method on that is that is any different than any other program, but it seems to be part of the issue as far as I can tell. As far as not receiving the text, it can't be a color issue because its not even there to highlight. I've been tinkering with this a lot to try to find out more for the fine wine developers to have a lead on.
Also seems that the steam friends itself isn't really responding much, it doesn't update like ever.. I have to log off (Which also doesn't show that I've logged out until I close and reopen the window), then log back in to see the current status's of my friends. I think its a redraw issue honestly.
I'm a software developer, but a more recently migrated to Linux (in the past year), so I don't know just yet how all of the code for Linux software works, but I am learning.
Just a summary, check into the draw functions for the application, it just has to be a fact of not redrawing when receiving information.
I'll make sure to keep you all updated if I find out anything more.

Also AL3X, I can sympathize because I was considering installing Vista on my machine again just to be able to use steam friends when I really do not want to do that. I am very happy with Ubuntu, but I need this steam friends to work soon.

--- Comment #57 from Ben Hodgetts (Enverex) ben@atomnet.co.uk 2008-03-15 19:11:24 --- Triage.
Bug severity won't be raised because: Severity is as it applies to Wine as a whole. So a major bug would impede a large amount of things in Wine in general. Normal would be a severe loss of functionality in an application (normally something stopping it from working at all or rendering it unusable). Minor would be either a small part of an app not working, normally an offshoot of some sort (in this case the Friends list of STEAM, which isn't the primary purpose of STEAM). On a side note: AppDB maintainers have no control of bugs and their severity.
Please stop spamming the bug with "please fix" messages or further confirmations, it's well known that it's not working and it will be fixed when a dev gets around to it (assuming someone can figure out how it needs to be fixed).
You're free to look at the Wine code and attempt a fix yourself in the meantime or have someone with experience do it for you.

--- Comment #58 from detructor15 steffen.linux@gmx.de 2008-03-16 06:16:20 --- you are so totally wrong: Steam Friends IS a main function of Steam Friends without that, STEAM is total unusable, because you want to play with your friends, and that is impossible without Steam Friends.

--- Comment #59 from Darren G dkgilmartin@googlemail.com 2008-03-16 09:19:57 --- I disagree with the argument that Steam Friends is not the primary function of Steam. This was true some time ago. However, Valve have created a large, feature-rich community portal which, to take advantage of, must be used with Steam.
The importance of these community features is almost on-par with the gaming aspect.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9771
--- Comment #60 from Ben Hodgetts (Enverex) ben@atomnet.co.uk 2008-03-16 09:25:57 --- The primary purpose of STEAM is to be a digital game download distribution system, not to be a replacement for MSN/AIM/ICQ/Yahoo. If you really need to speak with these people then use some other chat system for now, it is _not_ the main function of STEAM.

--- Comment #61 from Brett Smith megiddo@meg-tech.com 2008-03-16 09:41:34 --- I also disagree. Steam friends is indeed a primary function of Steam. It is a way to communicate with the community as well as a way to be informed of events coming up in your communities.

With that said, this is not a forum, so stop whining or arguing over the importance of steam friends here. Take the argument offline. This is bugzilla, so unless you have helpful information, stop commenting. Useless comments will just make this bug report harder to read and discourage developers from wanting to examine this bug.

--- Comment #63 from Stanly Ibkis bloodyiron@shaw.ca 2008-03-19 10:50:47 --- Also please take note that currently in order to play Team Fortress 2, we need to disable Friends and (i think) the Steam Community. I'm not sure if the bugs we see here will alleviate this, but I would like this addressed also. The ability to use friends in TF2 is pivotal to me, and other TF2 users as it enables us to play with our colleagues/friends/team-mates much easier than having to rely on an outside-the-game mechanism.

You'd have to compile it yourself, either using the git snapshot or downloading the entire tree...Or wait until 1.0-rc2 (Released this Friday, but not sure when a ubuntu package will be built).

--- Comment #85 from Brian Freytag brianfreytag@gmail.com 2008-06-01 14:23:38 --- A posssible work-around that works for me:
First off, my system specs:
Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit Wine 1.0RC3 AMD Athlon XP 2.2GHz 2GB DDR1 RAM (Dual Channel) Nvidia Geforce 6800n 120GB WD IDE HDD (100 for vista, 20 for linux for now)
My work-around:
This was a sort of response to that thread where the guy had his friend change their status and it worked for him... That did not work for me, but I found the idea of status changes to be interesting.
What I do, and it's worked 4 or 5 times without fail (at least for one open chat window) is to first type something... Then go to your Friends window and change your own status. I simply went through the list, changing my status all the way through offline, then back online then through again. Once I did that, chat started refreshing correctly and working great.
This is a hassle, but it works for me.

It was nominated, but that doesn't mean it will necessarily be fixed. Unless you have some information to contribute to this bug, the skills necessary to fix it yourself, or the resources to hire someone to fix it, then posting here is doing no good other than distracting developers from fixing bugs!
Office is used by a large number of businesses, many of which pay for Codeweavers to support it and drive Wine development. If Wine did not support Office, or if no one used it, Wine would not be near what it is today.
So please, unless you're contributing *useful* information to the discussion or a patch, take the complaining elsewhere. You could, for instance, petition Steam to release a native Linux client...

--- Comment #99 from thexception email@thexception.net 2008-06-10 11:54:52 --- I watched at debug ouput and made some tests. It seems like handling the message queue is stuck at some point. If someone writes me messages nothing happens.
If i resize the friends window all "hidden" messages get shown like they are received. At this point he also shows all notifications, and shows up alls the windows containing the messages.
So i don't think this is a bug in gdi32. I didn't figure out where it belongs to but gdi32 seems definitly to be wrong. This bug occurs _before_ showing the windows and painting the stuff.
Perhaps someone with more wine debugging experience can check that.

--- Comment #109 from Brandon eff4eye@hotmail.com 2008-07-05 19:12:28 --- I had problems with this in Ubuntu 7.10 with Wine (all versions). Sometimes I could get it working, but it seemed flaky at best. I upgraded today to Ubuntu 8.04 and ensured that Wine was at the latest version (actually I uninstalled and then reinstalled it). I have had no problems with it since the upgrade. Previously, to even see my list I used to have to open the friends list, change my status to online, then close and reopen the friends list. Now when I change my status, the update appears a second or two later in the window. I can also chat, and it appears to be working for me. Unfortunately, the shift+tab functionality during a game still does not appear to work.
If we are unsure if this a networking issue or not, it may be useful to get some netstat output. If someone out there could open Steam friends (maybe even open a chat window to someone too) and immediately take a netstat dump (for example: netstat -na > before_working.txt) then chant some incantations and play with it until it starts working. Once you are sending and receiving messages take another netstat snapshot (netstat -na > after_working.txt). Someone could then compare to see if there are any glaring differences. Not sure if it is overkill, but using "netstat -nap" might be even more useful since it will show the program name.

--- Comment #111 from Stanly Ibkis bloodyiron@shaw.ca 2008-07-18 11:49:00 --- I have been able to hack my way to get the messages to show, using a wierd combination of minimizing, resizing, and reopening the friends list and various message windows. However sound notifications of messages do not work at all. And the windows do not update unless I type something. Considering this I can be completely unaware of new message windows, or new messages in the same window until I type something.
I do not know if the sound issue is related, but it is directly connected to the friends list feature. If possible, please address this along-side the graphical messaging glitches.
If this gets fixed, will we be able to use the friends overlay in game? Or is that something completely different?

--- Comment #112 from Brandon eff4eye@hotmail.com 2008-07-26 15:09:03 --- The ability to shift+tab (GameOverlayUI.exe) is a different bug (see bug 11319). For some odd reason it was called "unfixable" and labeled as WONTFIX. I am fairly certain (though I have not confirmed this yet) that this does in fact work in CrossOver games. If I can confirm that fact then I will post in 11319 that it is not impossible.

to the "resizing the friendslist will refresh anything": negative! it doesn't. resizing the friendslist will ONLY refresh the friendslist itself. It was ever so for me, there is no version of wine where resizing the friendslist will refresh all other friends related windows.
In wine 1.1.2 there was a possibility by changing the status 3 or 4 times (from "online" to "away" to "offline" and repeat), after that, all works.
But since wine 1.1.4 the chat have never worked.

But thats for the messages, and we already know that they gets receved, but wont display. The only way to solve this bug is to analyze what is causing this. There must be some way to debug this, right?
This is as far as i got: If i disable all opinions in friends, a new frame will pop-up if i receve any message, i must then open, minimize and open the frame again to get the window to show. But from there on i need to trigger some event to refresh the window.

You live without it. It works for some people, it doesn't for others. Some people can get it working by resizing windows, causing them to repaint, others can't. For other people, it just works. For some, it works, then it stops working. If you really need Steam Friends to be reliable, your best option is to dual boot with Windows.

--- Comment #138 from AL3X alex_vip_1@hotmail.com 2009-01-04 22:23:32 --- Almost forgot... using wine 1.1.12 on Kubuntu 8.10, 2.6.27-11-generic, x86_64, 4GB RAM, NVidia 8600GTS with latest STABLE NVidia propietary driver...
I think that... something breaks inside wine when someone is typing... I mean... Its like a buffer or something... and if you type a lot of things it just crashes, not entire wine, but this thing particulary... Any ideas?

--- Comment #139 from AL3X alex_vip_1@hotmail.com 2009-01-05 18:57:27 --- Ok, have been playing around. Messages work for about 10 sec.
In wine 1.1.12, open Steam quickly, open Friends, and send something. You will see it. If you type quickly you can send 3 o 4 more messages, then something just gets crashed, friends freezes for a sec, and then you can't send messages...

--- Comment #140 from AL3X alex_vip_1@hotmail.com 2009-01-05 20:57:31 --- Ok... still playing... Messages wont work on 1.1.11, but DO work on 1.1.12, but just for a couple of secs, so, I think that the fault is wineserver...it just crashes on some kind of err, am I right? so... hopefully bug #9771 will be closed with next version (1.1.13)...

--- Comment #143 from Casey Jones kcjones1@gmail.com 2009-01-17 11:57:27 --- Update: There was a steam update, and I restarted Steam, and chatting works now. Maybe the Steam update fixed it? It fixed a bug with Steam not loading on Win2k and XP with no service packs.

Work for me in WINE 1.1.12 + KDE 4.2 rc1 + 2.6.27-24 + kubuntu amd64 =)
Works for me since the steam update in wine-1.1.12 on Ubuntu 8.10 amd64. That update also fixed my problem with steam stealing all my sound, AND the problem with source games having choppy sound when pulseaudio is running.

--- Comment #149 from detructor15 steffen.linux@gmx.de 2009-01-17 15:49:01 --- It works for me on my laptop (amd turion X2 and ATI HD 2600) sine wine 1.1.12 but not on my desktop (amd64 X2 nvidia geforce 7800GTX)
so I think it's a problem with the graphiccard driver from nvidia...
