Emperor - Rise of the Middle Kingdom cannot:
[this is written for wine 1.1.25]
1) Use Virtual Desktop. Always results in a crash
2) Use fullscreen. Since the default setting is fullscreen, you are practically
blocked from starting the game. I will attach a file so you can change that. 
3) Even if you use the above and to set the resolution to windowed(the game
will work fine then) you can never change the resolution
4) Also, the game also exits with a crash.

This bug may be related to bug #14995.

Resolution Fix

Replace the Emperor.inf file [ in directory:
/.wine/drive_c/Sierra/EmperorRotMK] with this one so you can start the game. It
just set the display settings to Windowed.

This is duplicate of bug 20933. If this bug report is about two problems, which
is a bad practice (1problem=1bug report), than open new bug report which is
different from 20933 (well it's later report, but is bisected).
