Summary: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: no sound in movies and no background sound/voices ingame Product: Wine Version: 0.9.61. Platform: PC-x86-64 URL: ftp://largedownloads.ea.com/pub/demos/rotk.zip OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: sebastian.friedel@s2005.tu-chemnitz.de
This was mentioned in all test results on AppDb but I found no bugreport for this so far.
The Problem: the game movies do not have any sound whatsoever. Additionally there are background sounds/music and character voices missing ingame. As far as I can tell, the same problem exists in the downloadable demo I linked.
I have played around a bit with ALSA/OSS settings and emulation mode but had no success with it. I'm testing on Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 with kernel 2.6.24-17-generic and snd_intel_hda sound using wine-0.9.61 from wine.budgetdedicated.com repository.

--- Comment #5 from Florian mcflow-forum@gmx.net 2008-11-28 11:09:21 --- Bug is still present with wine-1.1.9 There are some sounds ingame like flying arrows, parried swords but there is no voice and no music.

--- Comment #6 from Florian mcflow-forum@gmx.net 2008-11-28 15:44:32 --- Sorry for double posting. I checked the game folder and the movies are located in "./Data/Movies" folder. They are in AVI and I tried to play them with native totem and VLC. They showed the same behaviour like ingame. There is no sound, so I think this is a codec issue. I did a quick research and found out that "The Return of the King" seems to use Videos encoded in the DXGM codec which seems to be some kind of special codec by EA games. Maybe that could be the issue. I might try to reencode the videos to a codec I can play. Though I doubt that this will work. Still there would be the missing voices ingame.

--- Comment #7 from MiH@Ly4 brontosaur.91@mail.ru 2008-11-29 14:46:11 --- I've looked up movies' properties, and found out, that there are no audio channel at all. It seems that sounds, like ambient, music, or audio chanels for videos are situated separately in resource packs in the game. They seem to use libraries, such as EAX, or else, that hasn't implemented in Wine yet. Though, Cedega has the same problems with the game.

--- Comment #8 from Florian mcflow-forum@gmx.net 2008-11-30 05:51:46 --- I noticed too, that the clips have no sound track. I think they are taken from "./Data/Game/" There are folders namend like "ise" or "min". I think these are shortcuts for the particular levels. In the folders are some *.scw files. But I was not able to open them using ScoreWriter4 Demo or MovieMagicScreenwriter with wine. It could be interesting what is inside these files. Although I think that this wouldn't help us. Unsupported codecs or libraries sound reasonable as an explaination for the problem. Still to find out what the problem is.

--- Comment #9 from Sebastian Friedel sebastian.friedel@s2005.tu-chemnitz.de 2008-11-30 07:15:07 --- I always found this issue to be kind of strange.
I think I once got it working under wine around 0.96 and later it broke, but I already tried to do regression testing but never found a wine version that worked again.
Still broken for me too with wine 1.1.9 on Arch Linux 64bit.
