--- Comment #2 from pyro_1v1aniac@yahoo.com 2010-11-22 13:21:59 CST --- Confirm.
Launching through any means fails (within steam client, from applaunch -440 launcher, from the context menu of steam).
Hl2.exe appears briefly in processes, marks ptrace_stop, and then disappears. Half Life 2 launches and plays normally, as do all other source games on Steam
Apparently (from what I gather from elsewhere online) Valve updated with a hardware checker. Unrecognized hardware causes a failure to launch.
Could this be related?

--- Comment #5 from Roberto benfi@hotmail.it 2010-11-23 08:25:26 CST --- This issue might affect all source games, since is an update engine-related. I'll paste the engine changes:
[Windows] Added support for raw mouse input. Raw input reads directly from the mouse, bypassing Windows control panel mouse settings. This addresses issues with high DPI mice, and provides for a more reliable controller experience at various resolutions [Windows] Improved custom mouse acceleration [Windows] Updated mouse configuration UI to support raw input and acceleration; added tooltips to some of the options [Windows] Fixed UI tooltips so that they display correctly on first hover
As you can read, source engine does not use windows cp settings. So...wine doesn't handle raw input properly?

--- Comment #6 from XeonDead xeondead@gmail.com 2010-11-23 09:00:35 CST --- So only thing for cleaning that bug out is to add raw inputing into wine. Is that so hard to do?

Also affects Left 4 Dead 2, crashes after intro video.
Now all of a sudden Left 4 Dead 2 works again. I disabled Ubuntu ptrace protection, launched L4D2 successfully, and managed to launch it again with ptrace protection enabled. Also was able to successfully join a single player game. Didn't test multiplayer because I couldn't find a game going this early. Still no luck with Team Fortress 2.

While that works to get TF2 starting again, it stops the steam overlay (which was working previously) from working now.

--- Comment #15 from Roberto Sten_Gun benfi@hotmail.it 2010-11-24 09:33:55 CST --- So, let me know: Fast workaround: Disable in game community and override gameoverlayrenderer.dll to disabled in winecfg. This will get source games work back again but disables the in game overlay. Can you confirm that? I'm at university now and I can't open steam. I'll test that on Left 4 dead 1 when I can.
But is curious that raw mouse input related changes in source engine causes a crash when using the renderer.... By the way...Is that bug confirmed in ogher source games? (portal, HL2, CS:S etc)

This is extremely odd, on Wine 1.3.13, source games don't want to start anymore, other games like Half-Life and Team Fortress Classic launch. However since there's a new Wine version, I'll compile it from source and see what happens there.

Does Half-Life 2 work for anybody? Because it's the only source-based game that's currently working for me, TF2, Portal, and everything else doesn't want to launch, does it have to do with Wine messing up where the "gameinfo.txt" file goes or messes up its properties or is there something currently wrong with Steam?

Did you install Wine from source or from a .deb package? Because after installing Wine 1.3.14 from source, source games other than Half-Life 2 refuse to launch still.
On Debian Squeeze, currently wondering what is needed in order to play this game, among others. I've got the IA32 libraries installed, none need to be updated.

Interesting, so IA32 libs are the reason as to why TF2 won't work for me or any other game for that matter? It's kinda random and annoying. One game works, while the other doesn't, with WINE compiled from source.

Hi
ia32 libs is only for the 64 bit version of ubuntu, actually that is why the package is called ia32 because its the required 32 bit libraries which are needed in ubuntu 64 bit version,, you should continue to disable gameoverlayrenderer if that is working for you.

One developer told me that ubuntu's ia32 libs is missing some libraries hence the wine ppa offers its own set of 32 bit libs.

Ok i got a new ia 32 libs package from the wine repo a few days ago and team fortress 2 has started working again.
This is without any gameoverlayrender overrides.I havent touched any wine config. The game started working with the new ia 32 libs.
Of course , like always the game hard locks with my ATI 4850 .So it has always been unplayable for me.Only half life 2 is playable at decent fps.
I just got an updated wine now 1.3.14 today , will install and report back.
Hi colin
I use ubuntu 64 wine ppa .It offered me a newer set of its own ia32 libs a few days ago and tf2 started working again.
Interesting, so IA32 libs are the reason as to why TF2 won't work for me or any other game for that matter? It's kinda random and annoying. One game works, while the other doesn't, with WINE compiled from source.
One developer told me that ubuntu's ia32 libs is missing some libraries hence the wine ppa offers its own set of 32 bit libs.
So, for Debian, I have to look for more ia32 libs? Do development ones exist for compiling from source? Or could I just use the .debs if they exist for the devs? (I used to use the .debs, until I figured out how to compile something)

--- Comment #40 from pyro_1v1aniac@yahoo.com 2011-03-11 15:28:29 CST --- I've reinstalled Wine, started a new C: drive, reinstalled Steam, and copied my TF2 files over.
I still can't run the game without disabling gameoverlayrenderer.dll Or use Steam community in game
It's Ubuntu 10.04 Wine 1.3 from PPA Winetricksed in d3dx9 (doesn't work with it off either.) Nvidia Geforce 8600GT Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHZ 2GB DDR2
Anyone got any insights? it sounds like others managed to fix this.
How?

--- Comment #41 from Roberto Sten_Gun benfi@hotmail.it 2011-03-14 03:37:40 CDT --- I've done some tests about this in a machine with this specs: proc: Intel core 2 quad q 9550 2.6 ghz ram: 4gb ddr3 mainboard: asus p5q3 video: radeon HD 4870 1gb gddr5 3x hd western digital SATA 320gb os: Ubuntu 10.10 x64 kernel: 2.6.32.2 with BFS and BFQ patches. so: Playing TF2 and Left 4 dead (wich are the only 2 games I tested yet) with gameoverlay enabled does not crash my game. I can use overlay and chat without any problem at all (despite bad performance on ATI cards). Maybe is a Nvidia related problem?

--- Comment #42 from pyro_1v1aniac@yahoo.com 2011-03-20 12:44:56 CDT --- Tried TF2 on a similar machine to my own
(MSI GX720, Nvidia Geforce 9600M 4GB Ram, Core 2 Duo at 2.4GHZ ubuntu 10.04)
Won't launch without gameoverlayrenderer disabled.
This, I feel, rules out any configuration issues with my laptop.

I am using windows 7 mode, *no* winetricks overrides. Latest NV binary driver.

--- Comment #44 from rmlipman@gmail.com 2011-05-20 18:20:55 CDT --- Running 1.3.20 built with gcc 4.5
Tested TF2, CSS, HL2, portal 1.
TF2 crashes on the loading screen before getting to the menu. Reminds me of portal 2, but I don't know enough to say if it's actually the same thing.
CSS, HL2, and portal 1 still work though.

Is this still an issue in current (1.7.6 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.6 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).
