--- Comment #2 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-03-09 19:27:38 --- This app looks kind of shady; there's no way to download an official copy, for instance. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Share_%28P2P%29
So I'm unlikely to ever look at it.

--- Comment #3 from Luke Bratch l_bratch@yahoo.co.uk 2008-03-09 20:21:33 --- Eric, please do not reply to wine-bugs. Post in Bugzilla. Email read:
"The bug includes a link to download and a comprehensive crash log. Could you at least give it a shot?
Besides, other so-called "shady" programs like Winny and Perfect Dark are Gold and/or Platinum with current Wine versions."

--- Comment #4 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-03-09 20:51:09 --- It's not safe to download copies of apps posted by strangers. It's good policy to only use copies of apps downloaded from the authoritative source. Since there is none anymore for this app, I can't support it. The log you uploaded is not very illuminating.

Here's an authoritative source: http://p2p-db.net/download/download.cgi?name=Share10_ex2.zip

--- Comment #6 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-03-10 00:44:17 --- No, authoritative means "the author's web site" (or at least "has the same sha1sum as the app directly from the author's site").
A random Japanese p2p sharing site doesn't count as authoritative.

--- Comment #7 from Eric Appleman erappleman@gmail.com 2008-03-10 03:17:20 --- According to my prior knowledge of the program and http://uguu.org/share/ the checksums for Share.exe (not the archive) are as follows.
* crc = 3d8fe879 * md5 = c64c8739abd2d488fcc33dab1de0929a * sha1 = 7aa217c159f38394c0571c36817131851fe4b0aa
Also, is there anything additional with regard to logs and debug info that may prove helpful that you need from me?

--- Comment #8 from Eric Appleman erappleman@gmail.com 2008-03-10 08:45:44 --- I'd like to apologize for coming off as an ingrate.
Share is basically a deal-breaker for me. It is single-handedly the only reason why I am forced to run a virtual Windows XP desktop on top of my Ubuntu install.
So yes, having Share run through Wine is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to me.

--- Comment #9 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-03-10 10:40:04 --- This seems to be the closest thing to an official faq: http://uguu.org/share/#3
But even the share user community can't quite tell what's real and what's fake sometimes, see http://bbs.chiisai.net/download/kareha.pl/1143832336/
That's the problem with having an anonymous author; it's hard to create a chain of trust. The author has nothing to lose if he distributes subtle malware.
Somebody else can probably help you with this, e.g. by asking you for +relay,+seh logs, but I'm afraid I still don't feel comfortable running this app.

--- Comment #10 from Eric Appleman erappleman@gmail.com 2008-03-10 11:15:53 --- I've been using this program on pretty much a daily basis for over 3 years and I will vouch for its security.
Share will not send or receive any data unless you provide nodes.
At any rate, wouldn't your fears be alleviated if you ran a virtual livecd Ubuntu session?
But honestly, it's your choice, and I don't who else to turn to for help. Feel free to drop names and e-mail addresses. Just don't leave me in the dark.
Thanks.

--- Comment #12 from edward savage epssyis@gmail.com 2008-03-13 13:35:11 --- I would close this bug as wont fix until there is a safe release that can be tested. Clamav was unable to detect any virus though hints.txt contained in the download is a binary file and some of the things winedbg sees Share.exe doing are very shady indeed. If you are going to look in to this bug further I strongly suggest that you do it in a sandbox.
Other than that the application crashes on loading with a run time error (see original debug) using any winver and after attempting several dll replacements. I wasn't able to find out very much while debugging as the application is a bit of a mess on loading.
To Eric, I suggest finding an alternative, learning to use a VM, or going back to windows if you can't live without this application as I suspect it will be a long while until it is supported.

Move along, nothing to see here ;-)
Verifying API entries of wine's in-memory kernel32 with placeholder from system32 isn't a good idea. Ask the author to get rid of such stuff.

--- Comment #15 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-03-13 17:28:10 --- That's interesting. Perhaps it's an anti-hooking measure.
In any case, it's probably not anything we're going to support any time soon.

--- Comment #16 from Eric Appleman erappleman@gmail.com 2008-03-13 17:33:23 --- Is a personalized patch or "how to" out of the question? I honestly could care less if it isn't supported, what I really want to know if running Share is even physically possible on Wine.

Yes, it is possible to circumvent this stuff by means of hacking the executable. But even then there are other wine showstoppers waiting ;-)
There are working alternatives, you could try winny/share successor "perfect dark" (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=6674)
