Bug ID: 35243 Summary: Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition fails to show up in windowed mode Product: Wine Version: 1.7.9 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: NEW Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: gyebro69@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 47002 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=47002 terminal output
I don't have Windows installed on my machine so can't tell how the game behaves under real Windows when it is started in windowed mode, therefore I'm leaving this bug unconfirmed until someone can confirm that the problem exists under Windows too.
By default the game would start in windowed mode and with cinematics enabled. When starting the game in Wine the splash screen is shown then I can hear the music from the menu, but no visible window is created, the game is running somewhere in the background and I can't switch to the game window.
I tested this bug under Gnome 3, XFCE 4.10 and Openbox window managers, the problem exists in Wine 1.4.1, 1.6.1 too. Disabling gameoverlayrenderer or native d3dx9 dlls won't help.
I have to change the settings in ~/BloodBowlLegendary/Config.xml to enable full screen mode that lets the game start, except for a crash which would be the subject of my next bug report.

I do not see this behavior with a Windows 7 box with latest BB EL patches, see http://forum.bloodbowl-game.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2742: starting videos are shown with sound and game can be played without any problem.

Can you please explain more the « splash screen is shown » part ? Are you talking about « launcher » that allows you to choose between 4 options before entering game.

I cannot see this behavior with an Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS box without any winetrick. :-S
Reading this bug report, I realized that I was playing the game in windowed mode, even if I could not see it. I mean that configuration file has windowed mode set and screen resolution corresponding to my entire screen. So that game is not shown into a window but as if it were full screen.

Are you using any kind of winetrick install script and/or PlayOnLinux usage ?
Nope, fresh wineprefix, only native d3dx9_36/d3dx9_28 and xact_jun2010 were installed.

A splash image is shown in the middle of the screen (640x400 px). I don't see any launcher here. I tested with the Steam version.

What is « only native d3dx9_36/d3dx9_28 and xact_jun2010 were installed » ? I did not install anything else than wine and game in order to play. Are these packages corresponding to your distro for wine ?

Just to double check that we speak about the same thing, I've attached 2 screenshots to this bug. Can you please confirm that what you see does match with attachment named « Splash screen (just before game starts) » ?
I see in your log file that you have latests patches for BB LE, I'll give it a try after installing them (until now, I only had 2.0.0.0 version installed on my ubuntu box).
Note also that I use wine version 1.7.8 (package wine1.7, version 1.7.8-0ubuntu1).

The game needs native d3dx9_36 (or d3dx9_28) because of: ... fixme:d3dx:D3DXCreateEffectEx (0x13ca40, 0x360000, 3247, (nil), (nil), (nil), 0, (nil), 0x33f074, 0x33f07c): semi-stub fixme:d3dx:d3dx9_base_effect_init HLSL ascii effects not supported, yet fixme:d3dx:d3dx9_base_effect_get_desc partial stub! ...

There's no launcher in the Steam version, only the splash screen is present.

On my side, I did not install anything besides wine (and made no winecfg changes). Is there a way for me to see if I use builtin or native DLLs ?

Ok, thanks for the info. What command line do you use to launch game ?
Now that I have BB EL patches installed, behavior somehow changed: I do splash screen for about 7 seconds, then I do not see anything for a minute or so (but I do here music and crowd sound from intro video) and then black screen until I left clic on mouse (I waited no more than 10s with black screen), at last game menu appears.
Have you tried waiting past first minutes after having launched game ?

Start the game with WINEDEBUG=+loaddll (redirect the output to a file)

I started the game from Steam, no specific command line was added. I also tried starting the game directly with 'wine Steam.exe -applaunch 58520' with the same result.

I've just attached output made adding this parameter. Indeed, I do use also native DLL. They are bundled with the game (including d3dx9_28.dll).

Sorry to insist, but isn't Blood Bowl *not* tagged as linux game in steam ? I tried to add my own game to my (Linux) Steam account, but steam didn't allowed me so (steam seems to need a .desktop file).

Another difference I see between our installation is that I use an AMD video card (not a NVidia one).
Well, I believe I am reaching my limits here… :-/ I installed game from scratch, but if I understand well this is not an option on your side (steam does not gives installation files).
As game runs on my computer feel free to ask for any further test I may do.

Same thing with BB : Chaos Edition. If the prefix is set to WinXP, i hear the main music but the game itself does not showed up.
Set wineprefix to Win7 resolv the issue.
