Hmmm... google reveals that Psychonauts uses OpenAL. I also have several affair with OpenAL under wine. (bug 20799, bug 20915). Time for retest ;)

--- Comment #4 from apmetcalfe@yahoo.ie 2009-12-08 16:02:28 --- Switching to the oss driver fixes this problem it seems. However the sound stops working in the cutscenes. Also it introduces a very slight sound lag. Very slight.

Maybe i get it wrong, but when you use OpenAL you use driver OpenAL, not Alsa driver, not OSS driver and because of that, you can't even turn off audio in winecfg (OpenAL driver is missing in Audio tab). Sorry if this paragraph is full of bulshits...
Other thing you can try:
1. openal32 (native) --copy openal32.dll if it doesn't come with game 2. openal32 (disabled) 3. compile wine with option --without-openal
Setup 1. & 2. in winecfg's Library tab.

--- Comment #6 from apmetcalfe@yahoo.ie 2009-12-15 16:24:31 --- Actually, with furthur play the crackling occurs under oss too. Seems to be rarer though.
I don't really understand the differences in the sound drivers either. I will give your suggestion a try when I have the time.
