I had tried running it as root too, but it's the exact same problem. It prints: wine: creating configuration directory '/root/.wine/'... then creates a new subdirectory ".wine-somethingrandom" and hangs there forever.
I've read about people having the exact same problem on different versions of Fedora Core too (me I'm on a spin-off of Mandrake), so it is not specific to the Mandrake/Mandriva package. There is really a problem, the program is either looping or endlessly waiting for something in particular.
I used to have (probably 2-3 years ago) a working installation of WINE, then I've been a while without using it, now I need it back but I really can't get the newer versions to work.
