Some forums explain this as risky, and can brick the HOME folder (https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu) or can I just use it 'on top'? If I uninstall will all the other software go with it and have to be reinstalled? Regards Kristie

Upgrading wine does not really modify your existing wine installed programs/data. All that changes is your version of wine.

even with original reported Wine 1.6.2 release I can't reproduce a crash.
Unfortunately OP wasn't very specific about details, i.e. if the crash happens before UI is shown, if user action needs to be done (selecting menu item ...) So "fixed" is kinda questionable but well.
