This was encountered on wine 2.7 (not staging).
To reproduce, start the game, click through the introductory dialogue, and stand in one of the electrical fields after the ship begins to explode.
You will see a popup with the attached crash log, and the application will abort.

Does "winetricks d3dcompiler_43" work around the problem? That looks like a Game Maker error..
