Summary: Touhou 6, 7, 8 and 9 do not render text correctly. Product: Wine Version: 1.3.2 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: pastorrub@msn.com
Some text doesn't render correctly, I suspect it is because of this error since in other Touhous without this error it doesn't appears: fixme:d3d8:IDirect3DDevice8Impl_ResourceManagerDiscardBytes Byte count ignored.

--- Comment #2 from Momiji wolftengu@gmail.com 2010-10-02 16:59:04 CDT --- This is probably a duplicate of bug 15146.

--- Comment #3 from Knightlain pastorrub@msn.com 2010-10-02 23:21:57 CDT --- Before it is considered a duplicate, I make this question, are the methods for showing the text the same? Remember that touhou 10 and up depend on d3dx9_36.dll that is why I think about the possibilty that the methods for rendering text would be different.

Yep, all the Touhou games (maybe sans IaMP/SWR/HSTS) require a functional DIB engine for text rendering, which means both bug 15146 and the infamous bug 421 need to be fixed before the text is completely fixed.
One more thing, Wine's version of d3dx9_36.dll is now functional enough to run Touhou games, so you should see no difference in game operation if you use a native or built-in version of the dll. On top of that, it's not used for text rendering anyway.

Actually, the issues in Touhou 6-9 seems to depend on which graphic card is used as well. On a system with Nvidia GeForce 9400M all the text in Touhou 6-9 renders correctly. When I instead try on a system with Nvidia GeForce 6200SE, I get that text is invisible as in the picture previously attached to this bug.
Bug 15146 for Touhou 10 and up is always present, regardless of card used.
This leads me to think that this is a different bug from Bug 15146.

I'd definitely say that's either a video card or video driver issue. Which drivers are you using with it, and what version? Also, do you have fancy 3d desktop effects turned on (e.g. Compiz)?
My system has a GeForce 9800M GS (512MB RAM) and everything works as well as it should, with nvidia-drivers-260.19.06.

Probably the video card then. The Nvidia GeForce 9400M has worked for all tested versions (at least since 195.x), and is currently running with Nvidia 260.19.04.
The system with the older 6200SE card is presently at a different location, so I can't say the driver version for certain, but it is either 195.x or 256.x
No desktops effects used on either computer.

--- Comment #9 from tyle7@hotmail.com 2011-11-15 07:17:17 CST --- This seems to be fixed as of wine-1.3.32-204-g49cade4b. Have now tested with the Nvidia GeForce 6200SE that showed no text earlier, and now it works.
This was likely fixed by Huw Davies' recent gdi32/DIB driver text patches.
