Installation works, but when trying to start the program it shows on the task bar and tries to load for about a minute before disappearing completely.

What Vista services doing on Wine? Why it's vista to begin with? Default Wine's win version is WinXP.
Closing invalid. Remove ~/.wine directory, _properly_ install aim. No native overrides, no settings changes. And make sure you using wine-1.1.24
