The only way to close ecc is to kill the procces. Upon loading Ecc displays a black or grey windows then hangs.

Could you try run it in a virtual desktop? It doesn't hang , but is "generating images" which takes a lot of time. After that is finished , it starts fine for me
The splash screen telling me about the generating images is for me only visible in virtual desktop mode, without it I have a dark rectangle, just like you.
