Bug #: 35008 Summary: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.0 Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: l_rivers@efn.org Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 46656 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=46656 backtrace
Greetings. I run ubuntu 13.10 on a ThinkPad-T61 with 2.9 GIB memory, an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T770@2.40GHz*2 and a Graphics Quadro NVS 140/PCie/SSE2 with OS type 32-Bit all on a 154.2 GB Disk.
My goal is to get Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.0 going! WINE installs the Windows-XP version no-problem,... but maybe one little SNAFU. I launch my Dragon NaturallySpeaking and get a failure with this error message:
"Cannot find the file 'C.\windows\speech.dll"
Please advise
Leo

--- Comment #2 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2013-12-03 08:33:44 CST --- Hello, Leo the bugreporter. NatSpeak 12 and later does not run well in Windows-XP. This is a Nuance "bug." Users have reported that a critical file is missing. Nuance has posted instructions saying to download a certain Windows DLL, but here's what I think.
Try first running winecfg on your existing wineprefix and update the version to Windows 8. If that doesn't work, you may have to re-install on a new wineprefix that has already been set to Windows 8. BEFORE YOU DO THIS be sure and remove your existing NatSpeak installation using wine uninstaller. That way, you won't use up a license.
This should work. Please report the results to this bug.
Note to self -- installation instructions for 11.0, 11.5, are severely obsolete. And 12.0 and 12.5 should be updated.

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for over a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.37 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.37 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).

--- Comment #4 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
the backtrace shows this is a dupe of bug 35432

But the initial comment talks about an entirely different problem. Don't do that. Missing 'speech.dll' is described here:
https://nuance.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2304/~/cant-find-speech....
https://nuance.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3838/kw/4.0.4.2512/r_id/...
--- quote --- Some Dragon NaturallySpeaking programs rely on an earlier version of the speech API file (SAPI 4.x) for speech functionality. Windows XP is packaged with a later version of the speech file (SAPI 5.0). During installation, the Dragon NaturallySpeaking installer interprets Windows XP as Windows NT.
Since Windows NT has the proper speech.dll component, the installer skips this part of the installation process. However, Windows XP does not have speech.dll installed. As a result, Dragon NaturallySpeaking does not work.
Complete the following procedure to resolve the issue:
Close any open windows or programs and return to the desktop. Uninstall Dragon NaturallySpeaking if it is already installed. Insert the Dragon NaturallySpeaking CD into any drive. Double-click the "My Computer" icon. Right-click the drive that contains the NaturallySpeaking CD and choose "Open" from the menu that appears. Double-click the "Redist" folder. Double-click SPCHAPI.EXE in the window that appears. Follow the prompts to install these files. When the installation is complete, close any open windows and return to the desktop. Reboot. Double-click the "My Computer" icon. Double-click the drive that contains the NaturallySpeaking CD. If the installer does not load automatically, double-click SETUP.EXE in the window that appears. Follow the prompts to reinstall NaturallySpeaking. --- quote ---
So what do we have here:
* dupe of bug 35432 (backtrace) * invalid -> installer/app bug about SAPI 4.x * abandon -> OP didn't bother to respond further
Selecting 'INVALID'.
