Bug #: 31528 Summary: Left 4 Dead 2 display freezes when KDE KWin desktop effects are enabled Product: Wine Version: 1.5.10 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: fossphreak@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Launched Left 4 Dead 2. KDE desktop effects were turned on before launching. Noticed that Left 4 Dead 2 did not display anything during game startup (neither Valve intro or the game intro or menu) - however, the background music and sound was being played. Turned off desktop effects and then the game menu showed up immediately - the game in itself was running fine, only the display froze.
Turned on desktop effects again, and the game display froze once again. If I moved my mouse over the menu options, I could hear the sound that indicates the mouse hovering over an option, but the display did not update (the menu option over which I was hovering did not turn white). Turned off desktop effects and the display immediately unfroze.

--- Comment #1 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2012-08-23 02:06:16 CDT --- Please add your system specs (like graphic card, driver version). Does this work with an earlier version of wine?

--- Comment #2 from fossphreak@gmail.com 2012-10-27 14:05:43 CDT --- Sorry for the late reply, it looks like it works now when desktop effects are enabled. However, there is another problem, when another program, for example this browser is open, and I enable desktop effects, only the wine window is displayed (I have set Wine to emulate a Windows desktop with a resolution of 1366*768, so it covers the entire screen) and I am unable to switch to any other program.
When I turn off desktop effects, I am able to switch to other programs.
I am using Wine on a laptop, with a Radeon HD 6650M graphics card and with the AMD Catalyst 12.11 beta driver.

--- Comment #3 from fossphreak@gmail.com 2013-03-29 02:02:52 CDT --- So, after several months I am using the open source radeon driver, and this problem doesn't affect me right now. Resolving.
