Wine users have had problems with missing mfc42.dll for years as evidenced in
forums and other records. The error reports are not useful and the Wine user,
or would be user, is frustrated at best. Winetricks will not install mfc42.dll
either, reporting a bogus checksum problem. Microsoft is similarly not useful.
A suggested fix is for Wine documentation to explicitly recognize the problem
and provide the required solution or direct the user to it.

In the instant case, fresh Ubuntu 12.04, Wine 1.4 and Winetricks 20120308,
attempting to install Irfanview 433, the solution was to copy mfc42.dll from a
Windows XP system into Wine's drive_c/windows/system32 folder. No installation
required.

Missing MFC is bug 657, problems in winetricks should be added in it's own bug
tracker (https://code.google.com/p/winetricks/issues/list), anyway winetricks
version 20120912 works =)

The problem is documentation useful to new(er) Wine users. Just Google "mfc42"
and read thru years of frustration by the persisters. Those who gave up are
lost without a trace. This problem is not Bug 657 - although a useful response
to 657 might be a good close to both.

As Bruno says, the lack of mfc42 already has a bug, and winetricks has its own
bug tracker. As for documentation, the FAQ has had a section on what to do
about missing dlls for at least 4 years; users' failure to read it is not a
Wine bug.
