Summary: Half-Life 1 based games don't start with nvidia-drivers- 169.09 Product: Wine Version: 0.9.53. Platform: PC-x86-64 URL: http://www.steampowered.com/ OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: l_bratch@yahoo.co.uk
Created an attachment (id=10430) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10430) Console output with wine-0.9.53-289-g71f81bf
Guessing directx-d3d as the component.
Half-Life 1 and Counter-Strike 1.6 don't start with the 169.09 nvidia drivers, but do with the 100.14.23 drivers. They get as far as drawing the window, with the bottom two menu options, then close.
Attached is the console output with the latest Git. A lot of it is just the output from Steam, but hl.exe's output is between line 188 and line 361.

--- Comment #1 from el elton@schiert.net 2008-01-28 16:40:36 --- I've got a Go 6800 and I am also experiencing this bug. The last working driver is 100.14.23. The earliest driver that exposes this problem is the 169.04 beta driver. Only the Steam version of Half-Life seems affected.

--- Comment #2 from Charles Moyes TheChuckster@gmail.com 2008-01-28 19:14:54 --- This problem happens to me, too, with the same console output as Luke Bratch. I am using Wine 0.9.54 instead, with a Nvidia Geforce 7950 GT using driver 169.09 also. The in-game menu shows up with only the bottom two menu options visible for half a second, and then I'm back at my desktop again with just the Steam window open. The last lines in the terminal are about closing while the winmm ll-driver is still open, just like in Bratch's log.

--- Comment #4 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-01-30 21:59:42 --- Same here. I'm not sure if this is d3d related or not. My Half-Life was configured to use OpenGL. Backtrace from the memdump is not much help: Wine-dbg>bt Backtrace: =>1 0x7e085306 in libglcore.so.1 (+0x4b5306) (0x00000000)
The +wgl channel doesn't tell nothing useful either.

--- Comment #9 from Tres Finocchiaro tres.finocchiaro@gmail.com 2008-02-10 00:37:58 --- I confirm this bug. Took me a long time of searching before I came across this page. Thanks for those who have posted. I've contacted the wine mailing list with no reassurance.
What I've noticed is d3d works well, but OpenGL crashes.
I've been doing some extensive testing against a file "gameui_english.txt" due to the predictable "Options" "Exit" menu, and noticed if you put a blank "gameui_english.txt" in the valve/resource folder, you can get the game to load. It appears to be a bug related to having spaces, since "Options" and "Exit" don't have a space, but "Find Servers" "Create Servers" etc do.
This occurred shortly after using Envy to auto-update my video drivers.

--- Comment #13 from Roderick Colenbrander thunderbird2k@gmx.net 2008-02-28 10:31:49 --- This was an Nvidia driver bug and not a Wine issue. Nvidia claims to have it fixed in 169.12:
Release Highlights:
Improved power management support with GeForce 8 GPUs. Further improved stability on some GeForce 8 GPUs. Fixed a bug that broke certain TwinView configurations with TV-OUT on GeForce 8 GPUs. Fixed a bug that could cause OpenGL to crash in certain cases, e.g. when running Counter-Strike under Wine. Further improved GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap out-of-memory handling. Fixed a bug that could result in incorrect PowerMizer state being reported. Improved nvidia-xconfig behavior when updating X configuration files without a "Module" section. Worked around a problem that caused function key presses on some Toshiba notebooks to result in system crashes.
