After installing wine 0.9.55 on Ubuntu Gutsy (8.10) running winecfg freezes machine needing reboot. Nothing I can find in logs to explain what is happening.

The most likely cause is your video drivers. Ask your distro's support channels if you need help upgrading them.

Video drivers most likely. Try another version/updating them/vesa/generic drivers and see if the same occurs. ATI is known for buggy drivers.
