After installing wine 0.9.55 on Ubuntu Gutsy (8.10) running winecfg freezes
machine needing reboot. Nothing I can find in logs to explain what is
happening.

Invalid.  Wine can't freeze your machine.  Check your drivers.

I did not say wine freezes machine, but that running winecfg freezes machine. 
Fault may be elsewhere but is triggered by running winecfg and by nothing else
in my experience. Some interaction no doubt.

What drivers do you mean ? Check them how?

Winecfg is essentially just a wrapper to run "wine winecfg.exe.so".

The most likely cause is your video drivers. Ask your distro's support channels
if you need help upgrading them.

Video drivers most likely. Try another version/updating them/vesa/generic
drivers and see if the same occurs. ATI is known for buggy drivers.
