First off, you may be asking yourself, why is this marked as a blocker? This
sounds like a very minor issue. This is where I'll try to correct you, this
effects every single application that supports Audio input. Programs such as
Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Reason, KORE, FL Studio, Adobe Audition, even Skype.
Although audio recording does function, the quality of the said recording is
absolutely horrid, and is garbage by todays standards (in the 60s it may have
been considered acceptable). It sounds like you're an alien, in a wind tunnel
trying, to start your lawn mower. It's 2011, this has been an issue for well
over Six Years now. No one should have to use PulseAudio, OSS, or anything
else. Alsa is built into the Kernel, and Wine doesn't support it at all, this
to anyone should be disgusting. There's Bug 5159, and quite a few others
scattered all over the place. They do not represent the issue as a whole.

Further testing of Audio applications can't even begin to occur until this is
fixed. The results are always skewed. This is also what keeps on turning me,
among with many others that I know (couple dozen or so) off of Linux. We hate
*buntu, everyone else manages to do it properly and utilizes Alsa. Hopefully on
Bug day (or even prior to that) this finally gets resolved for good.

As stated in the original bug, this has been an issue since Wine was created.
So that would be every Wine version up until 1.3.12, and probably every single
version after that until this is resolved.

This kills every single piece of Audio Production / Telecommunication software
out there. This is not a 'minor' issue. At the very least the severity,
according to the very page you linked me (which I did read before filing this
bug), is Major, if not a blocker.

which sound card does you have ?

For ac97 codec and HDA codec , the alsa sound card drivers have the following
controls

1) "Capture Volume"
2) "Capture Switch"
3) "Mic Boost"
4) 'Mic Boost (+20dB)'
5) "Mic Playback Volume"
6) "Mic Playback Switch"

There are also various kind of mic

"Front Mic", "Rear Mic", "Ext Mic", "Int Mic" annd "Dig Mic"

and other inputs

"Line" , "CD", "Aux", "Video", "Stereo Mix", "Mono Mix"

selectors which allow user to select the "source" of the capture device

1) Capture Source
2) Input Source

e.g. audacity 1.3.x (win version) allow you to select which "Capture/Input
source" but the linux version of audacity does not allow you to select which
"Capture/Input source"

running audacity in wine does not show the correct "Capture/Input Source"

Tested with on board (Some Intel Realtek chipset), Audigy 2 ZS Platnuim, and my
new Auzentech X-Fi Forte. The issue is present with all of the cards, and is
present across multiple machines.

does all the sound cards pass the winetest ?

This ticket has not been updated for over 900 days. Development recommends
to check the status on your bug every release or two and let to be known if the
bug is still present. If not, mark it fixed. If you are no longer able to put
effort to this ticket, you can abandon it.
