--- Comment #10 from Vincent Povirk madewokherd@gmail.com 2010-07-27 15:03:41 --- I'm guessing the TraceMessage call is another symptom of the failure, not a cause. That is, the program is using it to log a failure that has already happened.

--- Comment #11 from Vincent Povirk madewokherd@gmail.com 2010-07-27 15:07:23 --- On second thought, it's probably just unrelated.

--- Comment #12 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net 2010-07-27 16:21:56 --- Hello,
that TraceMessage() stub is incorrect, it should be cdecl and varargs (caller cleans stack).
Anyway, the installer (setuphlp.dll DllMain) deeply peeks into Wine's API implementation, specifically it looks at the API entry opcodes of native API exports and compares it with some sort of whitelist (probably in preparation for hook trampolines). Because Wine doesn't mimic NT style native API entries it fails - the TraceMessage() calls are just symptoms, resulting from mismatch.

--- Comment #17 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
revisiting.
I already said it in comment #12 - there is not much we can do here.
The installer (setuphlp.dll) analyses native API entry points and expects a certain layout to patch it later. It tries to disguise its actions by encrypting lookup strings for PE exports and xor'ing the API entry point addresses in memory.
* ntdll.NtQueryInformationProcess * ntdll.NtAllocateVirtualMemory * ntdll.NtProtectVirtualMemory * ntdll.NtReadVirtualMemory * ntdll.NtGetContextThread * ntdll.NtSetContextThread
The entry point analyzer can cope with some opcode variations but still expects Windows syscall trampoline layout (eax = syscall number, edx = KUSER_SHARED_DATA->syscall ...).
Shorted example what it looks for (it's actually more complex):
[00] [01][02][03][04] [05] [06] [0xB8] xx xx xx xx [0x8D|0xBA] ... mov eax, x mov edx, ...
Anyway, it seems in newer versions they dropped this garbage. I'll resolve this 'WONTFIX' here.
