Bug ID: 51538 Summary: Control can no longer launch from an ntfs partition Product: Wine-staging Version: 6.13 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: ritalat@fastmail.com CC: leslie_alistair@hotmail.com, z.figura12@gmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 70377 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=70377 control console output
I have a shared NTFS partition that I have used between Arch Linux and Windows 10 for a few years now. I have been able to play games such as Control in the past from it. Now multiple games fail to launch from that partition with similar "err:module:import_dll Library X not found" errors. Copying the entire game to a ext4 partition fixes the issue.

--- Comment #1 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- Does this work with upstream (non-staging) wine? Do you know what version of wine/wine-staging worked?
Can you run a regression test? https://wiki.winehq.org/Regression_Testing

--- Comment #2 from ritalat@fastmail.com --- Ok this might not be just a wine bug. I downgraded wine all the way back to wine 6.0 which definitely worked and this new issue still persists. I also noticed that the issue sometimes disappears after remounting the partition but this happens very inconsistently.
This does not seem to be a failing drive either. I tested with another ntfs drive I had lying around and it has the same issue.
I will do a full system downgrade later with the arch linux archives to try and see which packages could be causing this.

--- Comment #3 from ritalat@fastmail.com --- Created attachment 70382 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=70382 updated arch packages from july 21
The issues start with arch packages from July 21. I've attached the list of packages that were upgraded on my system between the 20th and 21st.
The wine-staging update seems to be a red herring as updating it to 6.13 but keeping all other packages from the 20th does not cause any issues.

--- Comment #5 from Josesk Volpe joseskvolpe@gmail.com --- Hmm now i got it why i had issues to run games on Liquorix kernel on Manjaro Linux recently, wich uses 5.14 version I had to go back to Manjaro's Linux kernel based on version 5.10.70
I also store my games (and Windows programs) in a NTFS partition, i'm minding to move to exFAT soon.

On truth, that's not that much recent, it makes some few times, it was probably 5.13 back then. I did not had this issue before

--- Comment #7 from Alexandre Julliard julliard@winehq.org --- (In reply to ritalat from comment #4)
The issue is caused by kernel update linux 5.12.15.arch1-1 -> 5.13.4.arch1-1
Assuming it's a kernel bug then.

Probably Wine on NTFS is working fine on 5.16.7, using ntfs-3g
