Summary: Microsoft FileFormatConverter.exe installs but does not work Product: Wine Version: 0.9.58. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dimesio@earthlink.net
Created an attachment (id=11631) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11631) console output when trying to open a docx file in Word 2003
Microsoft's FileFormatConverter.exe gives Office 2003 the ability to open Office 2007 files. I tried installing it to my working Office 2003 wine installation. The installer ran fine, ending with a message that installation was complete. However, when I tried to open a docx file in Word 2003, it aborted with the message "There was an error opening the file." I've attached the console output. Getting this program to work would be very useful to those of us who have to deal with documents from people using Office 2007.

It is supposed to work with Office 2000, XP, and 2003, as well as Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and Powerpoint Viewer 2003.

--- Comment #7 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-04-20 22:15:56 --- I installed it with PPT Viewer 2003, but it does't 'see' pptx files. Have you tested this in windows? Do you still run pptviewer 2003, or do you run PPCNVCOM.EXE (this one fails to run because of missing t2embed.dll, haven't investigated that one yet, not near a windows box).

I use it with Office 2003, primarily Word 2003. It works perfectly in Windows--once the converter is installed, Word 2003 can open and save docx files, Powerpoint 2003 can open and save pptx files, and Excel 2003 can open and save xlsx files.
I hadn't tested Excel or Powerpoint in wine before, but I just did, and both ended with an error message about being unable to open the file. Powerpoint's error message specifically complained "No text converter is installed for this file type". So even though the installer says the converter is installed, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint for some reason can't use it.
This problem may be part of a general problem with plugins in Word 2003. The AppDB has one report that specifically mentions plugins not working, and there is an open bug (5264) about the equation editor not working.

Extract the contents to the Office12 folder. Basically what this does is creates the manifest file that the converters need to load the c libraries.
I still haven't figured out powerpoint converter, something to do with t2embed.dll.

Office 2003 SP3 will not install; that's bug #13590. I just tried, and it's still an issue in 1.1.0. And SP3 shouldn't be needed for this--it's not needed in Windows.

Under 1.1.4, with a fresh install of Office 2003 to a clean wineprefix, FileFormatConverter.exe won't even install--it ends with a message that the install failed. It does this with or without Office SP3 installed, and the console output is exactly the same either way. Unzipping microsoft.vc80.crt.zip to the Office 12 directory (per comment #9) also makes no difference.

Maybe, but you can't test it without Office. It's not a freestanding app, it modifies Word, Excel, and Powerpoint 2003 so they can open Office 2007 docs.
I'll try the patch in bug 17600.

Office 2003 and fileformatconverter.exe both install fine with the patch.
The good news: it's fixed for Word 2003. I was able to open and create docx files with no problem.
The bad news: it's still not fixed for Powerpoint and Excel. Powerpoint complained about no filter being installed for the pptx filetype; Excel said the xlsx file was an unknown format and asked if I wanted to import it as text.
