year. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.51 or newer) wine?

Yes, it's still an issue with recent versions of wine including 1.9.1.

Still an issue using wine-staging 1.9.20. Though it does not crash because of
MFC42.dll any more. New backtrace attached.

It's no qurantee but you could try newer wine. Latest released is 2.8. 1.9.20
is quite outdated already. If it doesnt work you should add a log about the
fixmes before the crash.
