Summary: Source engine games don't even launch Product: Wine Version: 1.3.9 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: JimiJames.Bove@gmail.com
If I launch any game that uses hl2.exe, the launching window will finish and close, the process will pop up in the process monitor for a few seconds, and then just go away. The game never launches. I don't know if I have to specify any debug mode, but simply running it in the terminal provides zero output during the launching of the game.
This has been going on since 1.3.6 or 1.3.7, though it wasn't those updates that caused it. Nothing at all on my computer, in fact, was updated when this problem popped up, and updates for both WINE and Steam haven't fixed it, nor has running winepulse or killing PulseAudio before launching WINE. It also isn't fixed by every step that Valve and the Wine AppDB offer for fixing issues, including -nointro, -dxlevel81, and disabling Steam Community In-Game. It isn't fixed by a virtual desktop or a different Windows version setting. That's all I've tried so far.
I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 x64, kernel version 2.6.32.22.23 and I miss playing GMod and TF2 :(

Dupe of bug 22053
It is not a dupe of bug 22053. Did you read my description? Disabling Steam Community In-Game does not fix it, and this problem only happens with Source games, not ANY Steam game.

Not a blocker.
Sorry, I thought blocker meant something that completely blocks a program. I guess it isn't.

Try rm GameOverlay* once you are logged on steam, before launching the game.

Why don't you think I haven't already tried this? I have, plus non-Source games are running with the overlay flawlessly right now.

This has been going on since 1.3.6 or 1.3.7
Do you mean to say it works with an earlier version of Wine?

I'm not sure if it works with an older version. I do know it stopped working without any updates occurring, so I doubt it.
Looks like this problem fits under major.

--- Comment #9 from Jeff Zaroyko jeffz@jeffz.name 2010-12-23 00:49:28 CST --- Source engine games aren't really a wide range of applications in the context of all the applications which exist, but let's not worry too much about that.
I suggest you test with an earlier version of Wine to determine if this is a regression, if it is then you can run a regression test to help find why this has happened http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

All the winecfg settings are on default. It's not that I haven't looked at them; the default is just what's best for me. There's (maybe) a start with fixing the issue.

See if you can generate a log.
WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid wine steam.exe -applaunch <correct id of game> 2> log.txt bzip2 log.txt
Attach log.txt.bz2 here.

Make sure steam is already running when you do the above, it'll cut down on the log size. It may also take some time to complete.

Debug log of launching Counter-Strike Source
Did you compile wine yourself or use a binary package? If you did compile it yourself, try a binary package instead.
Try installing steam in a clean prefix and install CS:S in that prefix to see if it launches. eg:
wget http://cdn.steampowered.com/download/SteamInstall.msi WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-steam msiexec /i SteamInstall.msi
If that still fails, try booting an earlier kernel.

I used the default Lucid Synaptic install of wine1.3 (and wine1.2 for testing this bug). The clean prefix and the kernel change made no difference, but the only other kernel I had to choose from was just one number down. This is because I don't upgrade my kernel unless I know it fixes something, because upgrading it for the sake of upgrading it can cause problems, especially since my card is NVidia.
Should I try upgrading my kernel?

Is this still an issue in wine version 1.6-rc3 or higher or is this to be closed as abandoned ?

--- Comment #19 from Jimi E Bove JimiJames.Bove@gmail.com --- To be honest, I have no idea. I haven't tried to fix it in years because all of these games got ported to Linux by Valve. I guess we can declare it closed unless someone who cares about running them in WINE wants to test it.

--- Comment #20 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello Jimi,
--- quote --- I guess we can declare it closed unless someone who cares about running them in WINE wants to test it. --- quote ---
Well, I tested/investigated various Steam games in the last weeks (some of them Source engine based) and found most of the open bug reports targeting Steam games not applicable.
This bug was already cluttered with different issues which can be likely attributed to users having broken Linux packages/kernel/wine builds/prefixes.
Resolving 'fixed'.
If you still find a problem, please research Bugzilla carefully before likely creating a dupe. Most of the issues are documented and well understood.
