This appears on intel video chips, e.g. this: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation N10 Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) and also on i945 (EEEPC 901). This doesn't reproduce on nvidia.

This might be a bug in mesa. Do you still have the bug with your intel card?

Yes, still present on i915 with Mesa 9.0.
